Cable Pulling & Laying Equipment for LV MV HV Cables

CABLE SAFETY

Safety is critical when installing cables - today we are discussing methods of ensuring safe LV MV HV underground power, array and subsea cable installations.

Ensure cable safety by working within equipment load limits - we discuss below the safety critical role of cable socks and the need for independent break load testing to safeguard project, people and reputation.

WHAT IS FOS?

High Voltage Cable Installations

Factor of Safety (FOS) is used to ensure sufficient break load to handle working load spikes - it is critically important that all devices and tools used for cable pulling are rated for the working loads expected on each cable pull.

Break Load must equal or exceed the Working Load x Factor Of Safety.

How to Determine Breakload

HAVE YOU INSPECTED YOUR CABLE SOCKS?

Safety is our primary concern.

Inspecting cable socks is not an exact science, but is crucially important to ensure safe cable pulling operations, maximum grip strength and grip longevity.

There are a number of variables that can weaken cable socks that are not immediately obvious on visual inspection. However, there are some important and simple checks that you can do routinely to mitigate product wear, deterioration and potential accidents from happening.

LINE PULLING SWIVELS

Swivels designed for use in stringing high tension wires for electrical transmission and distribution. Line Pulling Swivels are important in pulling when the lines develop torsion during the installation.

Use of a swivel will release torque and prevent it from reaching dangerous levels, which can cause damage to the cable or cable socks.

Slingco also offers a ‘bull nose’ style swivel designed for underground and overhead applications.

MARINE CABLE SOCKS

After 12 months of extensive research and development, Slingco are delighted to launch their new range of cable socks.

Designed for installation of inter-array and export cables for offshore wind farms, the new socks have expanded ranges to suit common cable sizes used in offshore applications and have increased break loads.

  • Cable range of 90mm to 285mm
  • Length has now been standardised from 2.5m to 3.5m
  • Loadings have increased by 30%
