Prysmian JEM Resin
LV MV HV Cable Jointing Resins
Prysmian JEM Resin was developed to meet the growing concerns regarding Jointer exposure to isocyanates in the workplace, especially when using cable joints for jointing utility cables in confined spaces and cable trenches with inadequate ventilation.
JEM Resin developed by Prysmian is a non-isocyanate cable jointing resinwith all the technical performance characteristics of conventional jointing resins but with additional features and benefits for the encapsulation of LV, MV or HV joints typically operating at 600V/1000V, 11kV and 33kV.
Changing Legislation For Cable Joint Resins
From December 1st 2010 cable jointing resins containing MDI (Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) are re-classified as Carcinogen Category 3, suspected of causing cancer and will carry new labelling to this effect.
Subsequently, Prysmian is advising utilities, cable jointing contractors and specifiers to adopt a “Substitute it Now (SIN)” philosophy when it comes to choosing which resin products to use for jointing cables.
This applies to the vast majority of cable jointing resins on the market, except for Prysmian’s JEM resin cable jointing solutions which are 100% MDI free and present none of the health and safety risks associated with other jointing resins containing hazardous chemicals. From December 1st all Prysmian resin cable joint kits will be JEM resin only.

Cable Jointing Resins. Joint Encapsulating Material (JEM).
Prysmian JEM Resin Cold Pour Compound Features & Benefits
Low viscosity resin (very searching, no voids, easier mixing by the Jointer)
Easy mixing by the Jointer at low ambient temperatures (e.g. -15°C)
Curing reaction not sensitive to moisture (will cure underwater and in wet cable trenches or joint holes)
Filled cable joints with Prysmian JEM resin may be energised immediately if undisturbed
JEM resin supplied in clear pouches which allows mixing to be observed in process
Excellent adhesion to XLPE, PVC, Lead type cables
Type approved in LV cable joints (ENA TS C81/3 and BS EN 50393)
Cable jointing resin is tested in accordance with HD631.1
Re-enterable cable jointing compound resin version available

Prysmian JEM Resin
Cold Pour Compound Mixing Instructions
The Jointer must take care when mixing the JEM Resin prior to pouring into the cable joint shell or mould.
Step 1: Open container and remove JEM Resin Kit. The Jointer should check the resin bag for any signs of damage before proceeding
Step 2: Aerate the powder by gripping the pouch at each end and tumbling the powder for up to thirty seconds,
this will facilitate mixing of the JEM Resin
Step 3: To start the mixing process, hold the JEM Resin bag as shown above, so that the liquid is forced onto the powder
Step 4: Squeeze the liquid through the membrane seal and onto the powder
Step 5: Make sure that the membrane seal is completely open before mixing the powder and liquid together
Step 6: Before mixing the Jointer should rotate and shake at the corners to free the powder
Step 7: Tumble mix and knead the JEM Resin bag for up to two minutes, to ensure that there are no lumps in the bag
Step 8: Finally cut one corner and pour the contents into the cable joint shell
Customer Question…
“I’m supervising electrical connections on Scottish Power’s LV network – service joints of varying types. We have a cable jointer query regarding curing time of the Prysmian JEM resin you supply which I need to get completely right. Many cable jointers say leave the joint for 24 hours to cure, some say 2 hours. What is your standard curing time for service joints? Let’s assume it’s a single phase service off a 300sqmm PILC cable. Please bear in mind that we want to backfill and compact the joint bay in order to reinstate the joint bay, so assume we’re using a rammer. Obviously we will not backfill/reinstate if it compromises the cable joint’s integrity, however, we do have pressures to reinstate said joint bays as soon as possible.
Prysmian Answer…
“Full cure is not achieved for 24 hours but Prysmian JEM resin joints can be energised immediately provided they are not being moved.”
Cable Jointing Resins
3M Scotchcast resin insulated cable joint kits are designed for indoor, outdoor (weather exposed), direct buried or submersed applications.
