What is a Short Circuit?

Short Circuit is caused by:

  • Low Resistance – connection between conductors that results in excessive current flow in the power source
  • Internal Effects – breakdown of equipment or conductors from deterioration
  • External Effects – insulation failure due to lightning surges, overloading equipment

Typical circuit breakers trip or interrupt a fault.

  • Breakers trip between 0.06 and 0.1 seconds
  • Max electromechanical stress occurs at or before 0.005 seconds
  • Resistance to electromechanical forces within 0.005 seconds

Panduit Cable Cleats

  • Provide a safe work environment
  • Prevent downtime and lost revenue
  • Reduce serious workplace injuries
  • Reduce collateral damage to equipment

Panduit test their cable cleats to the strictest and most globally recognised standards IEC 619194:2015. Panduit’s R&D team has created a simulation cable cleat programme which simulates the forces present in a short circuit preparing the cable cleats for testing against IEC 619194:2015 and validating compliance with the standard.

Choosing the right cable cleat can be a time consuming process.

Traditional Cable Cleat Selection Cleat Process

  1. Customer sends parameters to the cable cleat manufacturer
  2. The manufacturer’s engineering team performs calculations
  3. Customer waits to hear from manufacturer
  4. Manufacturer provides cable cleat recommendation
  5. Customer selects cable cleat based recommendations

Panduit have released a new quick and easy cable cleat product selector app that streamlines the selection process. The only data required to be inputted is the cable cleat diameter and peak short circuit current requirement and the app will calculate and recommend Panduit cable cleats and provide IEC 619194:2015 cable spacing.

The cable cleat solutions are designed for a wide range of vertical markets including:

  • Petrochemical
  • Oil & Gas
  • Shipbuilding
  • Rail & Tunnel
