The photograph neatly contrasts the technical development of cable manufacturing technology over 50 years – the existing PILC cable manufactured in 1967 compares with the improved safety and easier to joint construction of today’s modern polymeric insulated cables with specially modified Low Smoke Zero Halogen cable sheath.
In this application, the existing cable is 11kV 3 core BICC SWA CTS PILC .3 Cu being jointed to 3 x 11kV Single Core XLPE LSOH 300sqmm and connected into a Hawker Siddely Switchboard.
Location : Cable Tunnels (below Edinburgh city centre).

Pictured: Cembre Crimp Lugs & CMP Cable Glands Terminating LV Single Core XLPE/AWA Cables. The BS6724 XLPE insulated single core cables with LSF (low smoke fume) outer sheath and 630sqmm stranded copper conductor were crimped using Cembre A120 copper tube crimp lugs and glanded with CMP CW50 aluminium cable glands.
LSZH (low smoke zero halogen) sheathed power cables are for use in public areas where there is a need to reduce the risk of harmful smoke and fumes when exposed to fire.
Cables manufactured in accordance with BS6724 produce lower levels of smoke and corrosive gas when exposed to fire than comparative cables manufactured in accordance with BS5467 and BS6346.

The insulating shelves are purely being used for phase identification of the conductors, and were applied using Cembre marking genius labels. The earth braids are part of a Nexans solderless earthing kit grounding the aluminium screens and Pfisterer mechanical shear-off life where also used.
