Cable Terminations Application

The MONOi heat-shrink termination range from Nexans is used for indoor installation to connect and terminate polymeric insulated (XLPE EPR) single core medium voltage cables with extruded easy strip conductive screen or bonded extruded conductive screens – the cable terminations are suitable for copper wire (unarmoured) or copper tape screened (armoured SWA (Steel) or AWA Aluminium) cables.

This high quality cable termination system provides a safe and reliable connection solution for conductor cross-sections at voltage levels: 11kV, 24kV, 33kV 52kV.

The cable core conductor can be alternatively connected with mechanical shearbolt type or compression cable lugs from Cembre or Klauke.

The termination using heat shrink technology is available with additional cable accessories for three-core cables including cable break-outs, bushing boots and additional medium/high voltage sealing tapes and mastics.

Technical Characteristics of Power Cable Termination for Medium & High Voltage Systems

The one-piece, co-extruded (Dual Wall) insulation body (GT12) consists of a heat shrink inner stress control tube and an outer anti-tracking layer – the heat shrink terminations can be shrank onto the prepared cable in at least one careful and consistent shrinking procedure and is characterized by a very low construction length. The compact cable terminations are compatible for confined space working in electrical switchgear, transformers and air-insulated cable end boxes.

Electrically strained areas (e.g. the semicon screen cut) are covered with stress control mastic providing additional stress relief supporting the steadily safe operation of the termination. Sealing mastic (MBA) in the area of cable lug and copper wire screen prevents a possible penetration of humidity.

Specifications & Standards of Cable Terminations

The cable termination meets the requirements of CENELEC HD 629.1 S2 and IEC 60502-4.

Nexans MONOi Cable Termination Ordering Procedure

Select the heat-shrink indoor cable termination type corresponding to both MV HV system voltage and conductor cross-section.

Order Example
Heatshrinkable Indoor Termination Type Nexans 24MONOi 1.240
Suits single core XLPE cable 12/20kV
70-240sqmm conductor cross-section (Copper or Aluminium)
Order number: 50783

Note
The classification does only apply for polymeric insulated XLPE cables (dimensions acc. to DIN VDE 0276-620) with extruded conductive screen. Please contact Thorne & Derrick when using other cable types. Cable terminations for other conductor cross-section are available on request for both medium voltage (MV) and high voltage (HV).

Cable Terminations | Technical Instructions

The data given were determined diligently, but do not release our customers of the duty to carry out tests themselves in order to check the suitability of the Cable Terminations delivered by us for the intended use. We reserve the right to modify characteristic and performance data according to the present state of Heat Shrink Technology.

Processing and use of the products cannot be controlled by us and are therefore exclusively in your field of responsibility.

Nexans products meet the VDE standards respectively correspond to DIN pages and IEC recommendations.

Attention: Before first design in please contact Thorne & Derrick or Nexans.

The MV Cable Accessory products, described in this catalogue, are designed for connection of MV HV bare energy cable conductors (Class 1 & 2) with description of round solid (RE), round stranded (RM), as well as sector solid (SE), sector stranded (SM) and round stranded compacted (RMV) for conductor temperatures up to 90°C.

All conductor filling materials like tapes, yarn, powder or similar need to be completely removed before the installation.

A check on basis of the actual existing conductor dimensions by the user is indispensable.

This applies also for the application of Class 6 conductors or other special conductor types. Impact wrenches have to be approved by Nexans.

Depending on different conductor material or conductor type, indicated values may differ from test values acc. to IEC 61238-1. The use of fine stranded conductors has to be approved by Nexans Power Accessories Germany GmbH.

Nexans responsibilities are only those listed in the latest edition of “General terms and conditions for the supply of products and services of the electrical and electronics industry”.

Thorne & Derrick can provide a copy on request.

Our MV Cable Accessory Products are mainly delivered in cartons.

Thorne & Derrick only use package materials able to be recycled due to the latest packing system.

Collapsible cardboard boxes are not taken back.

Reprinting, even partial, only with special allowance.

Nexans reserve the right to alter or modify the characteristics described. Illustrations and drawings may only show a close reflection and are not decisive.
