Arc Flash Protection Kit | ATPV 40 cal/cm² Jacket, Bib & Brace Overalls and Hood including Gloves

Switching Suits for Medium & High Voltage Power Systems | Class 2 Arc Flash Protection

ARC40 garments and switching suits offer protection from the thermal effects of short circuit electrical arcs, with an ATPV that does not exceed 40 cal/cm².

The arc flash suits are recommended for specific operations with significant arc flash risks, such as switching in an electrical substation. ARC40 clothing is also suitable for use in explosive atmospheres (ATEX Rated).

The arc flash protection kit comprises of a long, high collar jacket, bib and brace overalls, and an arc flash hood with protective helmet and and face shield. The light garment colour allows application in warm areas without considering the impact of sun. Garments comply to standards EN ISO 11612, IEC 61-482-2 and EN 1149-5.

The 40 Cal arc flash protection kits are available in sizes XS to 2XL.

Thorne & Derrick distribute a complete range of PPE to protect workers against the risk and hazards of Arc Flash – our range of Clothing & Workwear protects those working on or in the vicinity of live or potentially live electricity and power systems at LV MV HV. We hold large volumes of garments and clothing in-stock for worker protection on underground cables or overhead lines – providing electrical safety to Jointers, SAP’s, Technicians and Linemen carrying out daily Low Voltage fusing and jointing or the scheduled Medium/High switching or racking-in and racking-out of circuit breakers on medium/high voltage switchgear.

Arc Flash PPE Specification

The arc flash protection kit is made from double layer Indura Ultrasoft® fabric : 88% cotton and 12% nylon. The fabric makes use of the high abrasion resistance of nylon on the outside, which extends the life of the garment, while the cotton fibres make it more comfortable to wear.

Arc Flash Protection Kits

Long Jacket

  • High collar to cover the neck entirely on all sides, non-metallic zip fastener with flap closed by press studs, elasticated cuffs

Bib and Brace Overalls

  • Length adjustment with the braces.

Hood

  • Protective helmet with adjustment made by ratchet
  • Arc flash face shield with an ATPV rating of 40 cal/cm² with anti-fogging treatment. The face shield is in accordance with standard ASTM F2178.

Arc Flash Protection

The arc flash garments offer a refined design for optimal and full protection of all parts of the body. The joints between the different garments overlap, even while moving, ensuring that all body parts are protected.

aRC fLASH STANDARDS

40 Cal Arc Flash Protection Kit complies to the following standards:

  • EN ISO 11612
  • IEC 61482-2
  • EN 1149-5

Arc Flash Standards

The range of arc flash protection suits and kits addresses the requirements for clothing that protects from the thermal hazards of electric arcs according to applicable international standards.

The performance of clothing to protect from electrical arcs may be qualified using two test methods, depending on the zone of influence :

IEC 61482-2 : GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Test Methods
IEC 61481-2
Open arc method

Determination of the ATPV rating of clothing stated in calories/cm² (American principle)

IEC 61482-1-2
Box test method

Determination of the protection class of the clothing depending on the level of intensity of the electrical installation, according to two classes:
Class 1 (4 kA during 0,5 s at 30 cm)
Class 2 (7 kA during 0.5 s at 30 cm)
(European principle)

arc flash hazard categories

In the USA, the national fire protection association (NFPA) uses four categories to classify the arc flash risk. The principle of categories is the method used in NFPA 70E to inform users about the protection they need while working on or near live equipment. The aim is to be protected from the risk of second-degree burns.
