“We are trying to keep the craft in craftsmanship here at Tampa Electric Co. This high voltage cable nub was built by one of our apprentices. Not just anyone can be a cable splicer. You either have it or you don’t.” John McGaughan, Cable Systems Operations Specialist at TECO.
Tampa Electric USA has supplied the Tampa Bay area with electricity since 1899. Its West Central Florida service area covers 2,000 square miles, including all of Hillsborough County and parts of Polk, Pasco and Pinellas counties.

The company has 4,400 megawatts of generating capacity and over 667,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers that depend on Tampa Electric for reliable power and value-added energy services.

A high voltage 13.2kV nub or dead end on 750 MCM copper cable built to terminate a live end cable to terminate or splice in the future for network expansion. Note the apprentice signs and dates the lead work.

“I must agree with John McGaughan, we have to keep training the younger folks, it sometimes takes a while to find someone that has the “hands”, and the right attitude. Capping lead cables is a great start, learning the feel of the metal, and not the “fear” of the metal,” comments Douglas Page (EHV Jointer).

The NEW STAKKAbox™ Toby has been designed to provide a compact Telecoms joint box that can be installed in areas where it is congested with other utilities or there aren’t any pedestrian footpaths such as rural roads. The access chamber system can also be installed in the carriageway making it the ideal solution for your rural telco network.

System Components | STAKKAbox Toby & AX-S Ductile Iron Cover
New & Retrofit Network Installation
STAKKAbox™ Toby is available in a solid ring section that can be installed within a new network system or retrofitted into an existing network within the carriageway and has been tested and approved to BS5834 Grade A Heavy making it the ideal solution for EN124 carriageway Group 4 installations.
Easily Adaptable
The STAKKAbox™ Toby offers an easily adapted solution to on-site conditions that can be drilled with standard tools for duct entries on any side of the chamber wall and installed within new telco networks or retro fitted around existing utilities.
The STAKKAbox™ Toby is made up of one 300mm deep section that has a 150mm x 150mm clear opening with integrated base section.
With one of the sections manufactured with an integrated base section and the other without, the STAKKAbox™ Toby sections can be stacked to accommodate for deeper installations.
Utilising a Ductile Iron cover, the twin-walled chamber provides a superior strength system for an easily accessed network.
Materials
Polypropylene (PP)
The STAKKAbox™ Toby system is moulded in talc-filled recycled Polypropylene (PP) which possesses excellent strength to weight properties.
Each section is manufactured with twinwall and internal ribbing for improved loading performance.
Available Sizes
The STAKKAbox™ Toby provides an access chamber with a clear opening of 150mm x 150mm.
The single ring section at 300mm deep is built up in conjunction with a 120mm deep ductile iron cover to provide an over 420mm telecoms joint box.
STAKKAbox™ Toby can also be supplied with an extra section for deeper installations providing up to 720mm maximum depth of chamber.
Load Rating
The STAKKAbox™ Toby is suitable for installation in environments rated to BS5834 Grade A Heavy.
Suitable for EN124 carriageway Group 4 installations.
STAKKAbox™ Chambers are significantly faster to install than conventional alternatives, with complete installations typically taking under one hour. This results in reduced costs for the installer and significant time saving. No specialist equipment or plant is required in order to install an access chamber and there is no need for specialist box builders.
With flexible installation, Cubis access chambers can be adapted to suit on-site conditions with standard tools to build over existing networks.

Nuclear Rated Cables
Hinkley Point C Project
Nexans will play a key role in the UK’s energy transition with a contract worth around €20 million to supply specialized nuclear cables for the Hinkley Point C new nuclear power station. Over a six-year contract, Nexans will design and manufacture a total of 3,000 kilometers of cables developed to ensure safety, reliability and long life.
Hinkley Point C, under construction in the UK County of Somerset, marks a significant milestone in the revitalization of the UK’s nuclear power sector. With two EPR reactors producing 3,200 megawatts of power for the national grid, the plant will be capable of supplying around 6 million UK homes with low-carbon electricity. This will make a major contribution to the UK’s move to net zero and will offset 9 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year over the plant’s 60-year lifespan.
“ We are very excited to be involved in this ground-breaking project for the UK’s nuclear power program. We have already gained considerable experience as a supplier of nuclear-qualified cables for EPR projects worldwide, such as Flamanville (FA3) in France and Taishan in China. Winning the contract for Hinkley Point C confirms our solid reputation in the nuclear segment. The key to our success is the ability to combine technical expertise, high level products and extensive industrial design and manufacturing capability. ” Oliver Dervout Nexans Market Segment Director For Power Generation.
Nexans is supplying a variety of custom-designed, nuclear-rated cables for the Hinkley Point C site, including medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) power, control and instrumentation cables for pumps, valves, safety systems, power supplies and control room monitoring. They will be installed inside and outside of the nuclear containment area.
It is vital that the cables continue to perform safely and reliably under the demanding environmental conditions corresponding to normal, accidental and/or post-accidental plant operating conditions.
To satisfy the most rigorous safety standards, Nexans ENERGEN NUC halogen-free cables that comply with the Euroclass requirements for reaction to fire. They will be manufactured at the Nexans factory in Mehun-sur-Yèvre, France.
- Hinkley Point C is the first nuclear power plant to be constructed in the UK for over 25 years
- The project will make a major contribution to reducing the country’s carbon emissions and will have the capacity to supply six million UK homes with electricity
- Nexans ENERGEN NUC power and control cables will ensure continuous fail-safe operation for critical services at the plant’s two EPR reactors

Cable Cutting Shears
Cable Cutting Shears
Hiretech Limited has completed successful yard trials with its new 5 tonne subsea cable cutting shears.
The cable cutting tool trials were conducted ahead of a client’s recent cable repair project.
The trials were carried out to verify the required flows and pressures and confirm the cut times on 130mm, 203mm and 213mm diameter 3-core submarine export cables.
The cable cutting shears performed to expectation, delivering fast and efficient cuts to all three cables, utilising only 50-60% of the available hydraulic power.
Additional test cuts were performed on 9 5/8” drill casing, further demonstrating the powerful cutting abilities of the shears on tubular materials.
Hiretech added the shears to its rental offering following positive feedback from its client base. Available with 950t (5 tonne) and 1700t (10 tonne) shear force, the shears have been specified by Hiretech to provide safe, high performance cutting solutions on a variety of materials.

Performance, reliability, ease of operation and maintenance were the key considerations at the specification stage. The cable cutting shears have been designed for water depths of up to 10,000ft and can be powered and controlled from the surface, or from an ROV with hot stab and intensifier.
Duncan Duthie, Subsea and Decommissioning Business Development Manager at Hiretech, has been overseeing the product integration into the firm’s rental portfolio.
Mr Duthie commented, “This very significant investment by Hiretech demonstrates our continued commitment to deliver robust, reliable, and high performing rental products across a variety of sectors both domestically and internationally. As efforts shift towards a focus on efficiencies and sustainable energies, Hiretech strives to ensure it continues to meet evolving industry and client requirements.”
The company made two six-figure investments in 2020, adding subsea shears and air winches to its fleet, as progress continues to diversify and expand its rental equipment offering.
