Cable Sanding Tools for Polishing High Voltage Cables

vicera cable sander for hv cables
HV Cable Preparation Tool

Product Range: CST-M
The Vicera cable sanding tool is designed for use with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and rubber (EPR) insulated medium and high voltage power cables – the lightweight sanding machine is used to super-smooth the transition of the cable insulation and semiconducting screen.
The Jointer can simply adjust the speed of the drill, use different grain-grade sanding belts and if the Jointer pushes the sanding belt too hard it will stop spinning before sanding excess cable insulation due to the design of the traction rollers – the cable sander is typically used to improve power cable reliability on 11kV, 33kV, 66kV and up to 132kV networks.
vicera cable sander tool Overview
The Vicera Cable Sander is a purpose-designed preparation tool used for controlled removal and smoothing of semi-conductive and insulation layers on MV and HV power cables. It is commonly used during cable jointing and termination work to ensure a clean, even surface prior to the installation of stress control components.
Designed for use on a wide range of polymeric-insulated cables, the Vicera Cable Sander provides consistent material removal while reducing the risk of conductor or insulation damage. The tool delivers a uniform finish, helping to maintain electrical performance and minimise the risk of partial discharge in medium- and high-voltage cable systems.
The compact, ergonomic design allows for precise handling in confined site conditions, making it suitable for use across underground distribution networks, substations and industrial power installations.
CST sanding machine has an industry standard 10mm attachment shaft for the electric drills adjustable socket.

Carbon Free & Non-Conductive
The Rolls and Sanding Belts are carbon free therefore the cable sanding process is safe – the non-conductive grinding belt and rollers ensure the safest and most powerful sanding of cables at a single push of a button.
The sanding tool has an integral dust extractor connection avoiding the widespread dispersal of atmospheric dust reducing Health & Safety risks associated with insulation dust inhalation.

The Importance of Sanding Cables | Medium & High Voltage
1. Remove Semi-Conductive Layer Residue
• HV cables usually have a semi-conductive screen over the XLPE / EPR insulation
• Sanding ensures all residues are removed, leaving a smooth insulation surface
2. Prevent Electrical Stress Points
• Any scratches, sharp edges, or uneven surfaces on the insulation can cause partial discharge (PD)
• Sanding smooths the high voltage cable insulation to avoid stress concentration
3. Improve Adhesion of Stress Control / Insulation Materials
• Joints and terminations often require electrical tapes, stress control tubes, or epoxy.
• A properly sanded surface ensures better bonding and long-term reliability for medium/high voltage power systems
4. Reduce Risk of Tracking and Flashover
• Dirt, conductive particles, or rough surfaces can create leakage paths
• Sanding and then cable cleaning (usually with solvent wipes) eliminates this risk
Frequently Asked Questions
What cable insulation types and diameters is the CST-M suitable for?
This tool is designed for XLPE and EPR insulation is also suitable for cable measurements up to a diameter of 80 mm
Do shear bolt connectors require special tools?
No. Mechanical shear bolt connectors only require a standard socket spanner or wrench. No hydraulic crimping tools or dies are required.
vicera
Vicera’s range of tools and equipment was developed together with experienced cable jointers for the installation of MV and HV cable joints and terminations. With APU2.0 cable preparation and support work is easier, more ergonomic, and efficient to deliver. Based on significant experiences and feedback from the field, cable jointers rely on this to achieve higher quality of medium voltage cable installations.
