3M Standard Cold Shrink Cable Joints with taped electrode splice offers a viable cost-based alternative to heat shrink cable jointing technology. Unlike heat shrink alternatives a molecular permanent set ensures constant radial pressure is exerted on the MV-HV cable for the duration of the cable joints life.

The MV-HV cold shrink cable joint range covers many of the most common cable configurations and size ranges. The electrode in this case is built up by the cable jointer using 3M Scotch 13 Electrical Tape and the 3M Cold Shrink joint ensures no heat or tools are required.

1. Park 3M Cold Shrink cable joint body onto the prepared cable and connect cores using either MV-HV crimp connectors or mechanical shearbolt types and clean cables thoroughly. 2. The cable jointer must thoroughly grease the connected MV-HV cable in preparation for the cable joint body. 3. Once in position, begin to remove and unwind the inner spiral coil from the 3M cold shrink joint body in a counter-clockwise direction. 4. For extra peace of mind, take advantage of the fact that the cable joint body position is easily checked.

5. Place the copper earth stocking over the cable joint body. Ground and secure with 3M Constant Force Springs to provide armour earth continuity for 11kV/33kV wire armoured or braided cables. 6. Insulate the constant force springs with Scotch 23 Rubber Splicing Tape and then overlay with Scotch 2228 Rubber Mastic Tape. 7. Position the pre-parked 3M Cold Shrink Outer Protection Tube over the stocking and begin to remove the inner supporting core. 8. Continue to remove the inner core until the outer cold shrink tube is fully shrink, completing the cold shrink joint.
