Pictured: John Penny, measuring the copper tape screen that has been terminated using stress control prior to installing the silicone cold shrink tubes.
The photograph neatly contrasts the technical development of cable manufacturing technology over 50 years – the existing PILC cable manufactured in 1967 compares with the improved safety and easier to joint construction of today’s modern polymeric insulated cables with specially modified Low Smoke Zero Halogen cable sheath.
In this application, the existing cable is 11kV 3 core BICC SWA CTS PILC .3 Cu being jointed to 3 x 11kV Single Core XLPE LSOH 300sqmm and connected into a Hawker Siddely Switchboard.
Location : Cable Tunnels (below Edinburgh city centre).
