Cross Bonded Joints on MV Cable Circuits

Cross Bonded Joints on MV Circuits

Cross Bonded Joints on MV Circuits

When dealing with medium voltage (MV) cables it is important to consider whether to include cross bonding joints in an installation. Cross bonding joints cause a reduction in the induced currents circulating on the metallic screen of a MV cable.

Cross bonded grounding schemes are generally used in high voltage (HV) cable systems above 72.5kV voltage class while MV cable systems are usually solidly grounded without interchanging the cables screens of the different phases.

A solidly grounded system requires the metallic screen to be directly connected to ground potential at both extremities of the circuit, ie each end of the cable. The solidly grounded circuits, especially on longer runs and under high energy outputs become subjected to these circulating currents which diminishes the performance of the installation.

High circulating currents on the metallic screen of the cable can have negative consequences on cables and their accessories.

Cables become subject to high energy losses, overheating and reduced current carrying capacity, and overloading / damaging of the grounding connections of cable terminations and screen connections in cable joints.

Cross bonding schemes can be used to mitigate the effects of induced circulating currents, by establishing an insulated interruption between the joint screen wires as detailed above.

If the screen is solidly bonded to earth on both ends of the cable, a closed electrical circuit is built through the ground that allows induced AC current to flow continuously.

Other methods to reduce this circulating current include construction of the cable (3 core or single core), laying a trefoil arrangement, and running the cable at reduced load capacity. While these methods will not balance the circulating currents to zero, they can minimize them to an acceptable level.

Cross bonding joints can be particularly useful in renewable energy farms, where the MV cables are under high loading capacity and can run over 10km in one circuit.

This would allow for cables to be run to near full load capacity without diminishing the lifespan of the cable and its accessories. This provides a much more cost effective and safer solution compared to designing these installations with a solid grounded system.

Eccentricity provide a full assessment of your installation by use of thermography and electrical testing methods to determine the condition of your MV cables. They can retrofit cross bonded joints into your electrical installation where excess circulating currents are present increasing the lifespan of your cabling and accessories.

How To Measure & Install Access Chambers

Access Chambers

Installation Guide

Network access chamber sections are measured by the measurements inside of the chamber. Attention should also be paid to the external dimensions when deciding whether the network access chamber will fit into the area required.

Rapid & Easy Installation

Step 1: Arrange corner pieces and sidewalls to match the chamber clear opening dimensions. Ensure that the lip is on the outside of the chamber. The corner pieces should be all ‘left’ or all ‘right’ on each section and will alternate between the two as the chamber increases in depth.

Step 1

Step 1

Step 2: Layout the first ring section of connect pieces to ensure you have the correct components.

Step 2

Step 2

Step 3: Now connect the sections using the jointing peg, ensuring that the top of the peg is level with the top of the section.

Step 3

Step 3

Step 4: Build the next section on top, using the alternative corner pieces. This will provide a ‘brick worked’ chamber ensuring any joints are not in a vertical line.

CUBIS ACCESS CHAMBERS

STAKKAbox™ chambers are significantly faster to install than conventional alternatives, with complete installations typically taking under one hour. This results in reduced costs for the installer and significant time saving. No specialist equipment or plant is required in order to install an access chamber and there is no need for specialist box builders. With flexible installation, Cubis access chambers can be adapted to suit on-site conditions with standard tools to build over existing networks.

Network Rail PADS Approved

The Cubis Systems Network Rail PADS approved access chamber and cable protection products ULTIMA access chambers and MULTIduct™ cable protection were specified by Amey Consulting on a recent Midland Mainline upgrade at Kettering Electrical Stabling.

Reduction in track possession and installation times were key factors in the products being selected to deliver the electrical containment and chamber access elements of this light maintenance and stabling facility.

800×800 and 1200×1200 sized ULTIMA Chambers and approximately 700m of 4 Way XL MULTIduct™ were used on this part of the project and installed mainly along the four walkways between the tracks of the sidings.

The versatility of the modular ULTIMA sections was fully utilized on site, building up the levels of the chambers in segments to get to the correct height. This was found to be a much easier installation process than traditional build options given that the stabling facility was created by excavating down in excess of 2m from ground level to sub track formation.

Space is also at a premium when operating at trackside and the use of MULTIduct™ created significant installation space and time savings over regular circular ducting due to the compact profile.

The Cubis team helped from design phase to final installation advice, to ensure another successful rail project.
