66kV 72.5kV Heat Shrink CABLE JOINTS

Elcon Megarad’s high performance heat-shrinkable products offer a range of high voltage joint connection, cable repair and termination solutions on cable networks up to 66kV/72.5kV.

The ELCOhiTERM GLS 72 66kV 72.5kV High Voltage Cable Joints are heat-shrinkable, Type-tested, in compliance with IEC 60840 & IEEE 404 standards, designed for fixed installations and suitable for the primary distribution of HV power. IEC 60840 high voltage cable joints, used in unison with HV cable terminations, are suitable for direct burial and underground cables located in cable trenches up to 72.5kV. The high voltage heat shrink cable joint creates a connection between cables that uses a heat-shrinkable tube to create a secure waterproof seal, mechanical protection and electrical insulation.

The electrical field stress control is achieved by means of the Elcon Megarad specially formulated high permittivity tape, as well as high performance heat-shrinkable tubes.

Additionally, Elcon Megarad’s High Voltage Heat Shrink Cable Terminations 66kV/72.5kV are available using their 66kV 72.5kV high voltage heat shrink technology to terminate inline/straight high voltage cables in vertical or horizontal configuration. ♦ IEC 60840 specifies test methods and requirements for medium/high voltage power cable systems, cables alone and accessories alone, for fixed installations and for rated voltages above 30kV (Um = 36kV) up to and including 150kV (Um = 170kV). The requirements generally apply to MV HV single-core cables and to individually screened three-core cables and to their accessories for usual conditions of installation and operation, but not to special cables and their accessories, such as submarine cables, for which modifications to the standard tests may be necessary or special test conditions may need to be devised.

♦ IEEE 404 Electrical ratings and test requirements of cable joints used with extruded and laminated dielectric shielded cable rated in preferred voltage steps from 2.5kV to 500kV are established in this standard. In addition, test requirements for joint metallic-shield and jacketing components are defined. A variety of common joint constructions are also defined. This standard has been designed to provide uniform testing procedures that can be used by manufacturers and users to evaluate the ability of underground power cable joints, and associated metallic-shields and jacketing components, to perform reliably in service.

Heat Shrinking with High Voltage Joints & Terminations

When heat shrinking the tubes, use only a butane or propane gas torch. The cable Jointer must ensure the flame is soft, heat the tubes uniformly, then move the flame all around the circumference of the tubes. Following with heat-shrinking from the tubes end, directing the flame slowly towards the opposite side. Finally, stop when the tube is completely shrunk.
