Equivalent Intercable Tool UFS 17240

The Intercable UFS 17240 tool for chamfering the primary XLPE insulation allows a precise circular cut at the primary insulation and defuses the edge created by the cut prior to installing joints and terminations. The stripping tool is positioned on the MV HV cable with a clamping screw, the cutting blade is located on the top of the primary insulation and then turned around the cable – without the use of silicone paste. The UFS tool for chamfering is suitable for the application range from 15 to 60mm diameter, has a maximum rotation diameter of 130mm and interchangeable blades.

Chamfering Cables

Chamfering cables using appropriate cable preparation tools by the jointer decreases the density of the electric field at the edge of the cable insulation. The results of a simulation using Comsol show a lower density in the chamfered insulation in Picture 1. On the other hand, Picture 2 shows a higher density at the sharp edge of the unchamfered cable insulation. From a mechanical perspective, chamfering of cables is highly recommended when installing cold shrink joints – this prevents damage on the silicone joint body if heavy objects (rocks for example) hit the cable joints.
