Specification – 3M Scotch 2220 Mastic Tape
Scotch 2220 tape, manufactured by 3M Electrical, is a composite of an all-weather polyvinyl chloride (PVC) backing and a thick rubber based, pressure-sensitive adhesive. The 3M Scotch tape must be applicable at temperatures ranging from -18°C (ODF) to 38°C (100°F) without loss of physical or electrical properties.
The Scotch tape must not degrade when exposed to various indoor or outdoor environments. It must also be compatible with all synthetic cable insulations and jointing compounds. When used in junction boxes, cable trays or gutters, connectors shall be over wrapped with at least one-half lapped layer of glass cloth tape or varnished cambric tape before applying the product. Or, the entire product build-up shall be over wrapped with two half-lapped layers of an adhesive-coated cloth tape. Where use involves direct burial or continuous submersion in water, the product shall be over wrapped with a minimum of two half-lapped layers of plastic electrical tape.

3M Scotch 2220 Stress Control Mastic Tape Features
- Temperature rating: 90°C continuous operating with emergency overload temperature of 130°C
- Changes voltage distribution in the electrical field surrounding a high voltage termination or joint
- Reduces stress concentration to values found in continuous cables
3M SCOTCH 2220 – Applications
Provides stress relief for all cable terminations and high voltage joints. By changing the electrical field surrounding the joint or termination, the stress concentration is reduced from several thousand volts to values found in continuous cable.
3M Mastic Tape 2220 Installation – the tape shall be applied in half-lapped layers with very little tension and the silver colour side looking outside.
