Ripley SCS Adjustable Semi-Con Scoring Tool | MV HV Cable Tool

Ripley SCS Adjustable Semi-Con Scoring Tool

Models: SCS | SCS V2
Ripley SCS is an adjustable semi-con scoring tool for scoring peelable (easy-strip) semi-con screens on medium and high voltage power cables. Designed for cable jointing and terminating preparation, the tool accommodates cable diameters from 8mm to 51mm and provides accurate blade depth control to avoid damage to the insulation.
The SCS is a general-purpose tool for most MV cable constructions, while the SCS V2 is designed for improved control on bowed or curved cables and accommodates sheathed and jacketed 3 phase cable assemblies.

Product Overview
The Ripley SCS Adjustable Semi-Con Scoring Tool is a general purpose semi-con scoring tool used to remove peelable (easy-strip) semi-con screens from medium and high voltage power cables. It is widely used during cable preparation prior to jointing and terminating on MV and HV cable systems, including 11kV and 33kV power cables.
Manufactured by Ripley Tools, the SCS accommodates cable diameters from 0.31″ to 2.0″ (8 to 51mm) and mounts easily onto the cable. The tool is capable of performing longitudinal, spiral and calibrated square cuts while providing precise blade depth adjustment for controlled scoring without damaging the underlying insulation.
The standard Ripley SCS is suited to most medium voltage cable constructions and is supplied with a standard cable guide. The Ripley SCS V2 is designed to provide improved handling on highly bowed or curved cable and includes a narrowed cable guide for sheathed and jacketed 3 phase cable assemblies.
The SCS cable preparation tool has capability for longitudinal and spiral cable cuts and for calibrated square cuts. Ripley SCS V2 is designed to provide better control on highly bowed or curved cable. It is equipped with a narrowed cable guide that accommodates sheathed & jacketed 3 phase assemblies.

Blade Replacement Instructions
| Step | Instruction |
| 1 | Turn the black blade adjusting knob counter-clockwise until it stops. The dial should read 0. |
| 2 | Loosen the blade retaining screw with a 1/16 hex wrench and remove the blade from the collar. |
| 3 | Insert a section of cable into the tool with the base of the scoring head resting on the cable outer diameter. |
| 4 | Insert a new blade assembly through the collar with the flat of the shaft facing the screw. Drop the blade so it is resting on the cable outer diameter, then re-tighten the blade holding screw against the flat portion of the blade shaft. |
| 5 | Re-adjust the blade to the desired depth setting before resuming operation. |
Tool Upkeep
- Keep the tool clean and dry.
- Occasionally apply a few drops of 3-in-1 or WD-40 oil under the blade position knob to maintain smooth blade indexing.
- Inspect the cutting blade regularly and replace it when worn or damaged.
- Always confirm blade depth before scoring the semi-con screen.
Blade Alignment
The SCS tool is factory assembled for proper blade registration and tracking. If blade replacement is necessary, the ring cut can be checked and adjusted for proper alignment. The SCS is designed with a blade alignment feature to ensure the ring cut tracks squarely. If misalignment is identified, turn the blade alignment adjusting screw with a 1/8″ hex wrench in the correct direction to bring the tool back to a properly tracking ring cut.
Warnings
- This tool should not be used on live electrical circuits.
- Always use approved eye protection when operating the tool.
- Adjust blade depth carefully to avoid damaging the cable insulation.
- Use only on suitable cable sizes within the stated operating range.
- Replace the blade only with the correct Ripley replacement blade
