Thorne & Derrick Sign Nexans International Distribution Agreement
On 10 January 2018, Thorne & Derrick International announced a new International Distribution Agreement with Nexans Power Accessories UK.
The agreement marked an important development in the company’s growth strategy. In particular, it strengthened Thorne & Derrick’s offering of medium and high voltage cable accessories.
As specialist UK electrical distributors, Thorne & Derrick already supported cable installation, jointing and substation projects.
Furthermore, the business supplied equipment for overhead lines and electrical construction across LV, 11kV, 33kV, 66kV and EHV networks.
Through the new partnership, customers gained access to a wider selection of Nexans cable joints, terminations and connectors.
Supporting Medium and High Voltage Power Networks
Thorne & Derrick developed the partnership to support customers working across electricity distribution networks.
For example, the Nexans range includes cable accessories for substations, transformers and switchgear.
In addition, suitable products support both new electrical installations and existing network maintenance.
The agreement also brought together Thorne & Derrick’s distribution experience and Nexans’ cable accessory technology.
As a result, the companies aimed to strengthen the supply of reliable electrical connection systems.
Nexans Cable Joints, Terminations and Connectors
The distribution agreement covered a range of Nexans Euromold cable accessories.
These products support electrical installations operating at different medium and high voltage ratings.
Furthermore, the range includes alternative jointing and termination technologies for suitable cable constructions.

The original agreement highlighted the following product groups:
- Slip-on cable joints and terminations for suitable MV and HV cable systems.
- Cold shrink cable joints and terminations for electrical cable connections.
- Heat shrink joints and terminations for compatible power cables.
- Screened separable connectors for suitable equipment bushings.
- Interface bushings A to F for compatible switchgear connections.
- MV and HV Cable Jointing Tools.
- Switchgear and transformer bushings for electrical equipment connections.
- Cable jointing training and competency support associated with relevant programmes.
In addition, the agreement supported access to Nexans product information and technical expertise.

Nexans Accessories for 11kV, 33kV and 66kV
The partnership focused on medium and high voltage electricity distribution.
For example, Nexans manufactures accessories for suitable 11kV and 33kV cable systems.
Furthermore, selected products support electrical applications up to 66kV.
However, each accessory must match the cable dimensions, voltage rating and installation conditions.

The additional Southern warehouse supported a multimillion-pound stockholding capability.
Consequently, the business could offer next-day delivery on many stocked products, subject to availability.

Medium and high voltage cable accessories require careful selection.

The partnership aimed to combine Nexans product expertise with Thorne & Derrick’s sales and distribution support.
Chris Dodds on the Nexans Distribution Partnership
Chris Dodds, then Sales & Marketing Manager at Thorne & Derrick, welcomed the agreement.
He highlighted the company’s commitment to building a successful business relationship with Nexans.
The original announcement included the following statement:
“T&D are committed to a successful business partnership with Nexans and with agreed business plan in place to support this new agreement we expect a record-breaking 2018. Our Sales Team look forward to consolidating existing and developing new business for Nexans. The contract agreement further establishes T&D’s position in the UK market as MV-HV Specialist Electrical Distributors. We enjoyed record onboarding of new customers in 2017 and now have a cooperative sales and marketing campaign to implement with Nexans. We look forward to meeting and discussing this exciting development with our clients.”
Developing Existing and New Customer Relationships
The agreement formed part of Thorne & Derrick’s business development strategy for 2018.
In particular, the company wanted to strengthen relationships with existing customers.
Furthermore, its sales team planned to introduce Nexans products to new electrical contractors and utility customers.
As a result, the business aimed to expand its position within the UK medium and high voltage cable accessories market.
Jonny Hewitt on Supporting UK Electricity Networks
Jonny Hewitt, UK Power Team Leader at Thorne & Derrick, also welcomed the partnership.
His comments focused on Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) and Independent Connection Providers (ICPs).
He explained how the companies intended to develop relationships with contractors working on 11kV, 33kV and 66kV electricity networks.
“working with the UK DNO’s and their preferred ICP’s we look forward to developing existing relationships and presenting the full portfolio of Nexans MV Products available from T&D up to 66kV to new clients. We will be working closely with Nexans and contractors to achieve the specification and supply of their broad range of joints, terminations and connectors for 11kV, 33kV and 66kV electricity networks.”
Supporting DNOs and ICPs
UK electricity networks rely on specialist cable accessories to connect underground power cables.
For example, contractors install cable joints and terminations during network construction and maintenance.
Meanwhile, screened separable connectors provide connections to compatible switchgear and transformers.
Consequently, the Nexans agreement aimed to support contractors sourcing these essential products.

Richard Derrick on the Nexans Agreement
Richard Derrick, Managing Director of Thorne & Derrick, also commented on the partnership.
He praised Nexans’ technical support and approach to cable accessory development.
Furthermore, he identified the agreement as an opportunity for the two companies to develop additional business.

The agreement brought together representatives from Thorne & Derrick and Nexans.
In addition, the companies outlined their shared plans for business development and technical collaboration.
