Masterclass – 400kV Low Pressure Oil Filled Prysmian Extended Ferrule Straight Cable Joint
January 8th, 2020400kV
Joint : 400kV Prysmian Extended Ferrule Straight Joint.
Location : Regents Canal Shoreditch London UK.
Cable Jointer : Steve Fielder.
The EHV cable jointers on this installation were Steve Fielder and Matt Taffs – the fluid fitters were Stephen McLean and Billy Miller.
The Prysmian EHV cable joint was installed under induced voltage working conditions after a canal boat mooring spike was accidentally hammered into the cable causing a cable fault.
The canal had to be dammed off so a new concrete trench could be cast by the civil engineers to house the repair joint.
The ferrule is 1050mm in length providing an overall installed cable joint length exceeding 6 metres. The cable insulation is built up using block paper rolls, each profile end is then hand carved before the flashover roll is applied and finally screened.
The sequence of photographs show the highly-skilled process of wiping and plumbing high voltage cables and the boxing up and then loading of the cable onto a permanent lifting frame ready to lower into the cable trench. Water cooling pipes were required during the fitting of the Prysmian joint and joint shell mould body.
