Cable support Requirement

A customer required a cable support solution to support cables in a joint bay. Ellis were approached to deliver a solution. For this application, space was limited and a number of cables had to be accommodated for. The structures would also be required to be supplied in kit form to be assembled on site, due to site and shipping restrictions.

Ellis Patents Solution

Ellis Patents modelled the available space and then developed steel structures to support the cables and hold the required loads. The designs were validated with hand calculations and also FEA software. Once manufactured, the structures were load tested to ensure that they performed as the calculations indicated. The structures were manufactured from galvanised steel and bolted together, and the stands were supplied in kit format for assembly on site.

Cable Joint Clamp Bracket Requirement

Ellis were approached by a company who supply joints and protective housings to repair offshore subsea cables. The company had a design for the outer housing and the joint but required a solution for supporting the cable within the housing.

Ellis Patents Solution

The Ellis Patents Technical Team were provided with detailed CAD models of the enclosure. This showed the detail of the space and fixing points available. A design was developed that used a combination of standard products and a new bespoke design. To validate the design a combination of hand calculations and FEA was used. The detailed design drawings were sent to the Ellis production team and then manufactured on site.

Cable Hanger Requirement

Ellis were contacted by a customer as they had a range of cables on site that were supported in various configurations. After a review they decided that a standardised product was required to provide consistent cable support.

Pegasus Cable Hangers

Ellis Patents Solution

Ellis Patents attended the site and were provided with details of the cable locations and loadings. Various solutions were then investigated from this information. For this application, a polymer hanger with an aluminium spine was selected (The Pegasus Hanger) as this was best suited to the job at hand.

The Pegasus hanger is manufactured and can be rapidly assembled in the factory to suit the clients configuration. Various configurations of the Pegasus hanger were drawn up and manufactured at Ellis, which were then supplied to site and installed by the contractor.

Ellis was approached by a customer who requested a tool roll solution for holding cable core twisters, which are supplied by Ellis in a range of sizes along with their jointer tool range.

Ellis Patents Solution

Ellis offer a range of jointers tools that are used when working on power cables. These include cable core twisters in a range of sizes, cable core wedge and cable core stripper knife.

The Ellis team developed a prototype and then worked with a local supplier to manufacture the tool roll to hold the core twisters. These are now supplied to the customer under a single part number with six cable core twisters included.

Cable Support Requirement

Ellis was approached by a customer who were contracted to install cables in a trench on the Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station. The installation required the cables to be formed into a snake configuration in a concrete cable trough.

Ellis Patents Solution

Ellis modelled the trough, calculated the forces required to bend the cable and developed a solution. Various solutions were investigated including air bags, for ease of use. The solution was based on an off the shelf ram and hydraulic pump coupled with CNC machined aluminium base and a modified Ellis Patents aluminium profile to support the cable. The timescales on the project were short so it was essential to use off the shelf components and Ellis’s in house design and CNC capability.
