Cold Shrink Three Core Inline Joint for Mines & Quarries

92-AV6x2-3/C Series with Mechanical Connectors

Thorne & Derrick are Specialist Distributors for the 3M Electrical range of Cold Shrink cable joints suitable for jointing, connecting and splicing 11kV cables.

Cold Shrink joints do not require “hot-working” techniques associated with heat shrink cable joints – specified for use in potentially explosive atmospheres including hazardous area locations with flammable gas environments in the onshore and offshore oil, gas and petrochemical industries.

For the connection of MV HV cables in electrical equipment such as substation switchgear and transformers a complete range of 11kV/33kV Cold Shrink terminations are available for single and 3 core medium/high voltage cables.

3M QS1000 92-AV6x2-3/C Series Cold Shrink Joints are designed for inline cable jointing up to 12kV Umax voltage class -three core polymeric power cable systems with copper tape screen & armour, with or without lead sheath, according to HD 620 (IEC 60502). Suitable for use in hazardous areas and approved by UK Coal, for installation in Mines & Quarries.

11kV Cold Shrink Cable Joints are able to ensure quick, easy and safe installation of the QS1000 Splice Body due to 3M’s Cold Shrink technology and do not require special tools – by unwinding the plastic support core in a counter clockwise direction the 3M cable joint body can be installed.

3M 11kV cable joints are easily identifiable and are marked with the supplier name, cable cross section ranges, voltage class and cable type. These cold shrink joints have a shelf life of up to 3 years from the manufacturing date when stored between -40ºC and +50ºC at a relative humidity of <75%

3M QS1000 Cold Shrink Series – Kit Contents

3M 92-AV6x2-3/C Inline Joint Series includes the Cold Shrink QS1000 silicone splice body with:

  • Integrated stress control device
  • Conductive electrode
  • Silicone elastomer insulation
  • Outer semi-conductive layer
  • Copper screen sleeve
  • Constant Force springs and/or lead sheath connection components, and mechanical connectors
  • Flame retardant and Hydro carbon resistant mould shell and resin packs

3M Cold Shrink joints should only ever be installed by Competent 11kV Jointers using the correct cable jointers tools.

1. Cold shrink tubes are positioned onto the 11kV power cable to provide outer sheath protection and re-jacketing of the 11kV cable sheath

2. The cable conductors are jointed using either 11kV crimp connectors or mechanical shearbolt type, such as Pfisterer Sicon

3. The 11kV cold shrink joint body with integrated stress control provides a high voltage cable joint for 11kV XLPE/EPR cables

4. Once the HV Jointer has installed the cold shrink protection tube the 11kV cable joint is completed and can be energised immediately

1. Park the 3M Cold Shrink cable joint body onto the prepared cable, connect the cores and clean thoroughly using cable cleaning wipes. 2. Thoroughly grease the connected cable in preparation for the cable joint body. 3. Once in position, begin to remove the inner coil from the cold shrink joint body. 4. For extra peace of mind, take advantage of the fact that the cable joint body position is easily checked.

5. Place the earth stocking over the joint body. Ground and secure with 3M Constant Force Springs. 6. Insulate the constant force springs with Scotch 23 Rubber Splicing Tape and then overlay with Scotch Rubber Mastic Tape 2228. 7. Position the pre-parked 3M Cold Shrink Outer Protection Tube over the stocking and begin to remove the inner supporting core. 8. Continue to remove the inner core until the outer cold  shrink tube is fully shrink, completing the cable joint.
CABLE JOINT PERFORMANCE TESTS

The 3M QS1000 Cold Shrink Single Core Inline/Straight Cable Joint Series meets and exceeds the requirements of the European standard CENELEC HD 629.1. Test Report: 3M Italia S.p.A. Report No. I0594-0E dated December 14, 2007.

INSTALLATION
