3m Sensored Cable Accessories
For The Medium Voltage Grid
Now there’s an economical, proven way to gain visibility to distribution grid electrical measurements.
The power generation mix is changing due to the integration of renewables and electric vehicle (EV)charging infrastructures.
Load profiles, voltage level fluctuations and power flow direction challenges are emerging and utilities need more insight into their medium voltage distribution system.
19th May, at 2 pm (UK time): The first webinar will provide an awareness of the trends impacting the medium voltage electric grid and will highlight 3M sensing solutions.
9th June, at 2 pm (UK time): The second webinar will focus on ENEL’s power Utility experience.
Join our two live, free webinars to learn how 3M Sensored Cable Accessories can help to automate the medium voltage grid and support the integration of more renewable energies and the adoption of electric vehicles.
The first webinar “Digitising the Medium Voltage Underground Grid” will provide an introduction and the second one “Enabling ENEL’s Smart Grid Development” is about the experience of ENEL Power Utility.
3M Sensored Cable Accessories
Sensored Cable Accessories (SCA), from 3M, provide a retrofittable, compact and economical way for Distribution System Operators (DSOs) to gain visibility and data from their distribution grid with voltage and current measurements.
As the need and importance of measurement and data in the underground grid rises, 3M SCA provides a simple path to high accuracy solutions for assessing and improving fault detection, power flow and power quality. The advent of new regulations and integration of renewables into the medium voltage network, make the need for high accuracy measurements critical for assessing the health of your electrical grid and better managing the future of the network’s grid modernisation.

Thorne & Derrick International are specialist distributors of LV, MV & HV Cable Installation, Jointing, Duct Sealing, Substation & Electrical Equipment – servicing UK and global businesses involved in cable installations, cable jointing, substation, overhead line and electrical construction at LV, 11kV, 33kV and EHV.
Lovink Enertech LoviSil cable joints are developed on the basis of fluid silicones, a technology that can boast 25 years proven field experience with an extremely low cable joint failure rate.
Due to the construction and characteristics of the silicone-based insulation material, the Lovink LoviSil medium voltage cable joint is particularly suitable for applications with both polymeric and paper-insulated cables – the ideal transition joint, but also the perfect universal straight through joint.
Lovink LoviSil cable joints have been adopted by Western Power Distribution (WPD) due to their acknowledged low failure rate for the jointing of 11kV EPR cables.
The white inner casing is a polyester material which is bolted together and then sealed around the outside lip with a poly type resin which is very important to get level. The connections inside the case are filled with LoviSil dielectric silicone fluid. The outer red casing is filled with ProtoSil polyurethane resin.
The cable jointed on this occasion was 11kV Triplex 185sqmm with EPR insulation and bonded screen (WPD Specification).

Patton & Cooke Co.’s CTM’s are designed for splicing PILC (paper insulated lead covered) cable into solid dielectric cable. P&C modules allow easy and reliable construction of single phase taps or cable splices from PILC distribution cable feeders using Separable Insulated Connectors (i.e. Rubber Elbows).
CTM’s are rated for 15kV or 35kV applications and are available in 200, 600 or 900 Amp configurations.

Extra High Voltage or EHV 132kV cable jointing is a highly-skilled area of electrical power engineering.
Cable jointing skill-sets are not automatically transferred up the voltage classes from 11kV to 33kV and onto 132kV.
Different techniques and technologies are applied to jointing EHV cables including polymeric, paper lead, oil, fluid-filled and transition jointing using ABB, Ericsson, Nexans, Brugg, PfistererIxosil, Silec and 3Mproducts.

This webpage has been created to demonstrate the diversity of accreditations and skills demanded in order to joint 132kV cable.
The content derives entirely from the professional workmanship of Chris Barker who is highly respected by peers throughout the UK and international EHV power industry.

132kV Crimping – 1200sqmm Copper Conductor On LS Straight Joint
“If I MIG weld an aluminium core when jointing I would normally make the weld larger than the core itself. But on a cable termination the jointer must grind it down to conductor size – this requires exceptional welding skills from the HV cable jointer. Cadweld is acceptable but the jointer must open up the cable core and clean and flux every strand,” says Chris Barker.
