132kV Cable Joints
132kV high voltage power cables are installed indoor or outdoor in open air in cable containment tray, cable trough and conduit or for direct burial underground in free draining soil or inside cable duct where no mechanical damage is to be expected.
132kV cables provide power for utilities high voltage underground distribution systems and in commercial buildings, industrial plants, power stations and substations.
3M high voltage 132kV cable joints have been designed for XLPE polymeric insulated cables up to 145kV Umax according to IEC 60840 with or without lead sheath and with or without copper screen wires – this includes super-clean XLPE insulation with bonded semi-conductive screens and either copper or aluminium conductors up to 1600sqmm.
3M offers 145kV Class high voltage cold shrink cable joints that are designed to fit a universal cable and can be kitted specifically to meet the high voltage application.
Silicone joint body is manufactured from Cold Shrink Technology.
The outer re-jacketing is installed using heat shrink tube or polyurethane 2 part Scotchcast resin or other.
Joint kits are available with, or without shield break for cross bonding and are based on the SC/SS 145-II cable joint body family.
The 3M High Voltage 132kV cable joints 98-AD xxx-1/x are in compliance to EU regulation 1907/2007/EC (REACH).
All components of the 3M Cold Shrink 98-AD xxx-1/x range are recommended to storage and stock rotation under temperature condition of -40°C up to 50°C.
The shelf life of the 3M EHV loaded inline cable joint body is specified as 18 month. All other components are specified to 36 month.
Jointing XLPE To Gas Compression & Oil Filled Cables
As utilities adopt modern technology polymeric (XLPE insulated cables) the process of 132kV asset replacement of aged gas compression and oil filled cable circuits demands transition type cable joints – we can support all your requirements for the jointing, termination and connection of 132kV high voltage cables.
Gas compression cables were generally installed from the early 1950s to the mid 1960s and oil filled cables were installed from the 1950s through to the late 1990s. From the late 1990s onwards a new type of non-pressurised XLPE cable was installed.

Oil Filled Circuits
Thorne & Derrick supply a complete range of cable jointing materials to enable the refurbishment and jointing of 132kV oil filled cable circuits – this includes reinforcement for plumbs (Prysmian Araldite DBF/Aradur HY956EN Epoxy Compound), Pirelli G123 box filling jointing compound, Prysmian G38A box filling compound, BICCASEAL solid set putty, Bitugel bitumen paint, Scotch 69 glass fibre tape and tinned copper binder wire.
From 132kV Up to 500kV
Included in our 132kV range are taped cable joints and a range of joints for paper insulated (PILC) cables and transitions from paper to polymeric (XLPE) insulated cables. A complete range of factory tested pre-molded EPDM or silicone rubber cable joints up to 500kV both in standard or shieldbreak version for cross-bonding are also available. Different types of outer joint covers to suit various customer requirements are also available – this includes heat-shrinkable, synthetic tubes or a plain metallic cover with external sheathing.
