Cable Support Requirement

A customer required a cable cleat solution to fit existing brackets in a vertical access tunnel to a mine shaft. A range of cables were required to be held; the brackets were already installed in the shaft so the solution was required to interface with them.

Ellis Patents Solution

Ellis Patents received samples of cables and brackets and experimented with a number of retention solutions in their in-house test facility. Upon completion of the development work, new designs were created and manufacturing drawings produced. The material selection and size were backed up with hand and FEA calculations. One of the solutions was based around an existing design and the other required a completely new solution. Drawings were supplied to the customer including the supply of the part number to be filed in the project documentation pack.

Cable Support Requirement

Following Ellis’s supply of steel work on the Wear Crossing project, Ellis Patents was approached to provide a steelwork solution for the Springhead Bridge. The main design of the bridge had been completed but the structure to support ducts that would carry power cables was still to be completed.

Members of the Ellis technical team visited the site and were provided with detailed drawings of the bridge structure. Using this data a 3D CAD model was created and a design developed to fit the requirements of the project. A challenge specific to the project was that the cable supports were all required to be of varying heights due to the geometry of the bridge. To simplify installation and eliminate the potential for confusion on site, a single design was created that offered a range of heights. The design was required to be finished in a short timescale, so off the shelf material was used. The design was then checked for strength by using a combination of hand calculations and 3D CAD. The solution was then manufactured and assembled by Ellis.

Cable Support Requirement

Ellis were contacted by a mine in North Yorkshire. During the early stages of the project Ellis Patents were asked to provide a solution to supporting power cables around the site. The challenge was to provide a large number of parts in a short timescale.

Ellis supplies a range of existing cable hangers but for this application a bespoke design was required. Ellis used 3D CAD to design and develop a solution. The design was validated by use of hand calculations and FEA. Manufacturing drawings were then created and the hangers were manufactured at Ellis. The complete package of hangers, posts and support rails were transported to the customers site for installation by the customer.

Ellis was approached by a customer who had a number of challenges around holding power and communications cables in a mine; the application was challenging due to the undulating nature of the wall and ceiling. Ellis Patents can offer a wide variety of bespoke cable support products including cable hangers. The corrosive nature of the mine environment was also a challenge, so it was important that the correct material was supplied.

The Ellis team reviewed each area where a cable holding solution was required, they then reviewed existing designs to see if a standard design could be used, if not a bespoke solution was created. 3D CAD models were drawn up, these were checked for strength with a combination of hand calculations and FEA. Once the design team had validated the design, manufacturing drawings were released to the production team to enable Ellis to manufacture these. To ensure long term corrosion resistance the steel parts were hot dip galvanised and then powder coated. Samples of the products were also tested to ensure strength and the correct safety factors were applied at Ellis in their site test laboratory.

Cable Support Requirement

Ellis were approached by a customer to supply cable hangers. Cable hangers are standard products for Ellis Patents. They can also offer bespoke cable support to suit the needs of the application.

The cable hanger location and shape had been drawn on the overall sight plan. Ellis used this information to create a design that could be used with stock material and tooling, this was done to minimise lead time for the project.

FEA and hand calculations were employed to ensure that the products were suitable to carry the required load. Detailed fabrication drawings were created complete with applicable standards. These drawings were then used to manufacture the hangers on site at Ellis. The hangers were created from structural steel, this was welded and then sent for hot dip galvanising.
