What Is The Function Of Bushings?

Bushings are electrical equipment devices designed to distribute electric power and energy through a grounded barrier, such as the wall of a transformer or switchgear. The Euromold epoxy bushings provide an insulated and screened connection between the conductors in the equipment and conductor of the cable.

Nexans Euromold are world leaders in the manufacture of Screened Separable Connectors to enable the safe termination of medium voltage and high voltage power cables onto outer cone bushings of electrical equipment including switchgear, transformers and motors up to 66kV – cable connectors for the termination of MV-HV cables into gas insulated switchgear are also available with inner cone bushings, see inner cone plugs.

Euromold connectors are approved by leading gas insulated switchgear and electrical equipment manufacturers including ABB, Schneider, Brush and Siemens.

All Nexans Euromold connectors are 100%  AC withstand and partial discharge tested at Nexans factory prior to shipment.

Euromold bushings are deadbreak bushings for de-energised systems – the power has to be switched off before the connector can be disconnected from the bushing.

The following article enables the correct selection and specification of Nexans Euromold connectors depending on a) cable specification and b) electrical equipment bushing type (A, B, C, D, E or F). The diameter over the core insulation of the cable to be terminated is critical to the reliable performance of separable connectors.

T&D provide an informative overview of the 6 Bushing Interfaces common to MV-HV electrical equipment with dimensions according to European CENELEC EN 50180 and 50181 – this should benefit the electrical design engineer, project manager, project engineer and cable jointer.

Nexans Euromold connectors must be fitted onto the correct bushing when installed and can be used to terminate both single and 3 core medium voltage cables.

Multiple medium/high voltage cables can be connected per bushing by double-stacking or “piggy-backing” providing flexible solutions to complex cable termintion applications.

Bushing Interfaces

The MV-HV electrical equipment to which Nexans Euromold connectors are fitted to must have the correct bushing Interface and be designed to suit the cable specification.

Euromold connectors are suitable for connecting single and 3 core polymeric insulated cables with copper wire or tape screens up to 33kV – this has recently been increased to 66kV/72kV to cater for offshore wind farm cable terminations onto 66kV equipment in wind turbines.

Euromold 158LR Elbow Connectors are used with 200 Series Interface A Bushing – a Euromold 152SR straight connector option is also available.

Interface A can be identified by the 6 tabs common to 200amp load break systems typical to padmounted transformer applications.

Includes a push-on pin contact bail rather than bolt for connecting to unthreaded medium voltage bushings. The 200 series range of connectors for use with Interface A bushings are common to low powered 11kV transformers typically providing tap-off or direct feed of medium voltage power to remote locations.

Euromold 430TB Elbow Connectors are used with 400 Series Interface C Bushing.

Bolted M16 Nexans Euromold connectors suit 630amp switchgear systems and can be “piggy-backed” using couplers to terminate multiple cables per phase in compact switchgear – common to the UK switchgear market including both air and gas insulated type equipment.

The physical dimensions of the Interface C connectors are identical to the specification of Interface B design but with bolted contacts.

Interface C1 is 630Amp whereas Interface C2 is 1250Amp.

Interface F bushing connectors are available in 630A (Interface F1), 1250A (Interface F2) and 2500A (Interface F3) with tee connector design and supporting range of coupling connectors up to 66kV.

 

As a rule, ANSI specification type Interface D and Interface E connectors are usually black coloured whereas types A, B & C are orange-brown in colour.
