Straightening 300kV Transformer Cable Prior To Terminating Using Pfisterer 6S Plugs

The clean room is complete to prevent contamination, power cables heated and straightened at transformer.

Pfisterer 6S inner cone plugs prepared and ready to plug-in to high voltage GIS.

Jointers Motto : “Build it like you own it” (Nicklin & O’Malley).
Showing the HO connection located at transformer end and GIS switchgear end completed using Pfisterer Connex termination plugs (lower cable termination and cable cleating to steelwork and ground bus connection by others).

The Morning Commute
Returning home for a 8 day break via the Banff National Park. The park is Canada’s oldest national park, established in 1885 in the Rocky Mountains. Highway fencing and crossing bridges help wildlife safely navigate the Trans-Canada Highway. Since monitoring began in 1996, 11 species of large mammals—including bears, elk and cougar—have used crossing structures more than 200,000 times.
Andy’s Anecdote
Shio, a wise Japanese engineer once said “you are not a cable jointer and had nothing to do with designing this cable joint, so therefore you must not have an opinion”. This was in reply to a non-cable jointer saying “in my opinion you should …. ” (with reference to how jointers should joint).

Spiking & Spearing Cable Splices
June 8th, 2021“Teaching apprentices where and how they should spike or spear a splice to save all the cables for rebuilding a splice or just changing out the lead sleeve.”
John McGaughan, Cable Systems Operations Specialist at TECO.

“This piece of equipment was built back in the late 70’s. I think we replaced the pump and the hoses but that’s about it. The company who built it was Gibson Hydraulics in Tampa, Florida – it has served us well and as you can see. Haven’t speared or spiked a “hot” cable so far. And I hope that our crew’s never will.”
