The Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm is the second largest operating windfarm in the world in 2013. The farm has 160 turbines, which generate enough energy to meet the annual demands of 400,000 homes.

The requirement was to feed seven 117mm diameter cables along a specified route within a fabricated structure, which featured a significant number of twists and turns. The problem was that there was no existing product that would enable the cables to be installed in an efficient, safe and cost-effective manner.
Bespoke Cable Guide Clamp
The Ellis Patents team, which had previously developed a roller-system for installation of HV cables in power tunnels, took stock of the situation and set to work developing a solution that would secure the Siemens specification, and see them become the first company in the world to offer a two-in-one cable guide and clamp.
Within six weeks of the initial meeting, Siemens had approved our new product design, two weeks later five working prototypes successfully passed an installation trial in Germany and less than a month after that Ellis received the order and had the tooling ready for mass production.

France’s electricity transmission system operator, RTE, required cleats to secure cables in a technical gallery and risers connecting substations in the La Bocca area of Cannes. As the leading name for power supply in France, RTE was looking for a tried, tested and trusted solution to secure their installation.

Flexi-strap intermediate strap
Ellis Patents provided the Emperor cable cleat and the Flexi-strap intermediate strap. Both products are manufactured from 316L stainless steel, with a polymeric LSF liner. The Emperor range offers the ultimate protection against the harshest conditions. Flexi-strap, used in conjunction with Emperor, allows for cost efficiency in a trefoil installation.

Ellis Patents were involved in the Network Rail project to electrify the Severn Tunnel. The requirement was for a solution to carry the insulated ATF cable. An added complication for Ellis Patents was the aggressive conditions within the tunnel and the requirement for a 40 year product design life.

New Wear Bridge Crossing
Northern Power Grid installed power cables under the New Wear Bridge as a new main supply route. The existing route on the Queen Alexander Bridge was scheduled to be decommissioned due to its age and the phasing out of oil filled cables. The cable installation is unique in that it requires the cables to be suspended under the bridge and above a river. The cables are carried in Emtelle ducts.
Balfour Beatty were contracted by NPG to install the cables, they in turn approached Ellis to provide a cable duct support solution.
Cable Duct Support System
Ellis Patents Solution
Ellis worked with Balfour Beatty to develop a product to suspend the duct from the underside of the bridge, and also develop an installation methodology. The solution was based around on 12 off standard 2F+ clamp with a bespoke stainless steel structure.
240 assemblies in total were supplied. The frames hang from the underside of the bridge and support ducts supplied by Emtelle. Power cables are then installed into these ducts.
