Flexible Cable Repair & Jointing – 3M Resin

Flexible Cable Repair & Jointing – 3M Resin
Repairing Cables
3M Resin Flexible Cable Repair & Jointing Kits are an adjustable cold pour resin system for the permanent jointing and cable repair of single or multi-core power cables operating at LV (Low Voltage), MV (Medium Voltage) or HV (High Voltage).
The 3M Scotchcast Resin bonds attach securely to the cable sheath providing a permanent joint or repair with a tight seal. This seal won’t tear or come loose after installation. The cable joints can be used to joint or repair frequently coiled cables and are tough enough to use in weather exposed, direct burial or submerged locations. Three kit sizes are available enabling repairs to be made on cable ranging from 40mm O/D to 150mm O/D. 3M 2131 Flexible Resin is suitable for use with these joint kits.
Extended Cable RepairÂ
The Scotchcast cable repair can be overlapped for extended repair of cable jackets – the mould is a flexible wrap around design and is removed during the resin curing process – a new repair installation can be made that overlaps the initial repair so long as the finished diameter fits within the tolerance range of the M series kit (moulds can be re-sed up to 10 times). The 3M mould can be removed once the resin is no longer tacky – here are the 3M Electrical guidance times for “de-moulding” and resin curing times.

The 2131 resin is classified as LI-LMP-MMP (low voltage insulation and mechanical protection) according to Cenelec HD 631.1 S2 Standard.
Repairing Medium Voltage Power Cables
For the repair of MV HV cables with damaged cable sheaths in the 3.3kV/11kV/25kV and 33kV voltage levels additional components and Scotch Electrical Tapes are required.
Scotch 13 Tape is a semi-conductive tape used to replace the semi-con layer on the core of the MV HV cable – see Scotch 13 Tape.
Scotch 130C Tape is used to build up the core primary insulation ( similar to Scotch 23 Tape) – see Scotch 130C Tape.
Scotch 24 Tape is a copper mesh tape to replace the copper screen over the MV HV cable core – see Scotch 24 Tape.
Scotch 33 Tape is a PVC insulation tape used to secure and retain the Scotch 24 layers – see Scotch 33 Tape.
Please note – none of these Scotch electrical tapes are relevant for use on the LV Sheath Repair.

Flexible Cable Repairs & Joints For Crane Grabs
Flexible and reeling cables are subject to frequent coiling movement and high mechanical strain – therefore any cable repair solution should replicate the properties of that cable so as not to compromise operational efficiency.
The 3M Scotchcast M flexible cable joint repair kits are suitable for the repair of flexible reeling crane cables which pass over guide pulleys and drums especially in the container handling and port authority industry. This includes repairs to Cordaflex flexible and reeling cables on mobile equipment such as ship loaders, gantry cranes, stackers, reclaimers, inclinators, hoists and spreader cranes.
Typical Grabbing Cranes – Mobile Harbour Cranes (MHC’s)
- Multi purpose cranes for bulk handling, break bulk, container handling
- Floating cranes
- Barge or pontoon mounted cranes
- Slewing cranes (jib cranes)
- Fixed or rail mounted cranes with a single jib or double jib (level luffing)
- Ship unloaders (gantry cranes)
- Unloaders are normally used for handling very large volumes of bulk materials
