3M CSCAK cable abandonment kits are used to safely decommission redundant LV low voltage power cable circuits in the oil, gas and petrochemical industry.

3M Electrical cable abandonment kits using Cold Shrink, are suitable for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous area electrical installations without need for heat shrink, “hot-working” and naked flames in potentially explosive environments – CSCAK abandonment kits suit EEMUA 133 XLPE lead sheathed power cables (600/1000v and 3.3kV) for safe installation in hazardous area locations according to the ATEX Directive.

The cable abandonment kit uses a 3M Cold Shrink cable end cap, pre-stretched cold shrink tubes, Scotch 2228 Mastic Tape, Scotch 23 Self Amalgamating Tape and Scotch 24 Electrical Shielding Braid (tinned copper mesh tape) and constant force springs.

Cable abandonment kits are often used when cable is left underground but it is not intended to be left live. If by mistake it has power connected to it, the cable abandonment kit is designed to create a short circuit to earth so that it will trip out, thus it will render the circuit dead to enable the engineer or cable jointer to realise power was switched to it by mistake.

In this design by 3M Electrical, there are no provisions for stress control tapes or systems and screening because it is just not meant to be left live.
