âž¡ QS1000 are Cold Shrink Joints/Splices manufactured by 3M Electrical – the 3M QS1000 cable joints for single and 3 core cables are tested and rated to 15kV/17.5kV.
3M Electrical have a full type test report to 11kV for the cable joints – also 3M Electrical have type tests to show that the QS1000 splice bodies are tested to 15kV. The QS1000 splice is used in both the single, and 3 core joints, and the impulse level tests are relevant to show that all joints using the QS1000 are rated to 15/17.5kV.

Safe Electrical Isolation
Thorne & Derrick International, a Panduit Channel Partner, based in the UK and Specialist Distributors of Electrical Safety Equipment are delighted to provide this following Product Endorsementof Panduit Verisafe by Craig O’Neill of Steve Willis Training Ltd.
Initially sceptic but nevertheless open-minded Craig wanted to learn more – so we arranged a product demonstration.
” Verisafe is an electrical safety product manufactured by Panduit that automatically isolates electrical control panels and distribution boards. The risk of arc flash is an incredibly dangerous problem – arc flash incidents and blasts can vaporise someone in a split second. Having worked in substations for the early part of my career I was always terrified of being responsible for electrical isolation. One false move and it’s too late.” comments Craig.
“Verisafe eliminates 99.999% of this risk and should be implemented to every panel as a first step to isolation procedures. My concerns initially was the device picking up inductive back emf and other induced currents but the demonstration carried out by Glen Bate (Panduit IEI Account Manager) proved it can detect these.”
“Verisafe even detects when a phase has lost connection!”
“I am very good at finding product faults or shortcomings but so far I’ve found none.”
“The electrical safety device needs maintenance like any product but if put in a professional environment, this could easily be implemented into regular checks. Safe electrical isolation is a lesson we drum into our learners at Steve Willis Training Ltd because high standards of professionalism is at the heart of what we do. Electrical safety is at the forefront of being a professional and so it fits right in with our ethics and we were very pleased to have Glen Bate visit and discuss it with us. The students really had a good think about safe isolation after he left and it really helped move the us up a peg on the professional ladder.”

Subsea Cables
This document describes a Nexans standard MV Medium Voltage subsea power cable.
Optical fibres can be included upon request. Utilising the common nomenclature U0/U(Umax)1, the following voltage ratings are covered in this Subsea Cabledocument:
U0/U(Umax) = 3 Phase Core 11kV 6/10(12)kV
U0/U(Umax) = 3 Phase Core 24kV 12/20(24)kV
U0/U(Umax) = 3 Phase Core 33kV 18/30(36)kV
Fibre Optic Core:Â Multiple single mode fibres (G652) are encapsulated in a protective steel tube together with a hygroscopic filling compound. The final diameter of the FO element is tuned to match the primary interstice of the main assembly by extruding an outer polyolefin cable sheath.
Cable Armour:Â Protective layer(s) of galvanised steel wires is applied over the inner covering. Interstices are filled by bitumen for corrosion protection – these can be prepared using approved cable cleaners. The cable armour provides axial stiffness and crush resistance. Steel wire dimensions are according to IEC60502-2 section 13, and steel wire properties according to EN10257-2 and EN10244-2. A number of steel wires can be replaced by zinc wires for additional corrosion protection.

MV Cable Joints
A/ All 3M Electrical Cable Accessories which utilise 3M Cold Shrink technology are inherently safe to install in potentially explosive atmospheres as they do not pose a risk of ignition to flammable gases in hazardous area workplace locations as designated Zone 1 or Zone 2 according to the ATEX Directive.
For clarification on the relationship and application of ATEX with respect to Cold Shrink cable accessories for LV MV applications refer to our Blog ➡
Thorne & Derrick stock and supply 3M Electrical cable joints for MV cables with 3 core cable construction for both XLPE/EPR type cables – these are polymeric insulated cables.
For single core cables where the cables to be jointed are located in hazardous areas with hydrocarbons present the cable joints can be encapsulated using a joint mould/shell and Scotchcast 1402FR resin – the joint would be installed according to the Jointing Instruction as usual apart from the final cold shrink outer tube which would be substituted with the cable joint mould/resin.
Typically, installers have used the 92-NA-6U cable joint kit, manufactured by 3M Electrical, which is designed for LV unarmoured cables – the mould shell fits over the cable stripping dimensions of the 3M 92-AG Cold Shrink range of MV joints for single core polymeric cables (XLPE EPR). The larger 1451-PET mould can also be used in conjunction with appropriate volume of 3M resin using the Mix Pack 7 litre packs. This solution would provide excellent protection of the cable joint against the deteriorative effects of prolonged exposure to hydrocarbons in either air installations on cable containment or direct burial where the joint is to be buried in underground contaminated ground or cable trench.
