Installing HV Heat Shrink Cable Terminations 33kV
- 33kV Cables With Copper Wire Screen or Copper Tape Screens
Copper Wire Screen Cables
- Remove the outer cable sheath with 33kV sheath stripping pliers over a distance L + X (L= see table below, X = depth of cable lug barrel + 5mm). Remove bedding tape and copper strip. Clean the outer cable sheath over a distance of 50mm and apply a layer of red thermoplastic tape (with a 50% overlap).
- Bend back the copper wire screens over the cable sheath in a parallel way so that each wire rests upon the thermoplastic tape. Fix with a wire wrapping (2 or 3 windings) at about 50mm below the cutback edge of the 33kV cable sheath. Twist and bind the copper wire screens together, cut at the correct length, install the 33kV cable lugs and connect to earth. For cable terminations located outdoors with armour (SWA or AWA) also connect the earth braid/wire screen to the 33kV cable armour by soldering or solderless earth connection.
- The 33kV cable jointer should then remove the conductive tapes and elements for longitudinal water tightness.
Copper Tape Screen Cables
- Remove the outer cable sheath with sheath stripping pliers over a distance L + X (L= see table below, X = depth of cable lug barrel + 5mm). Remove bedding tape. Clean the outer cable sheath over a distance of 50mm and apply a layer of red thermoplastic tape (with a 50% overlap). Carefully remove the 33kV copper tape screen over a distance up to 20mm from the outer sheath.
- Connect the earth braid to the copper tape screen, by using a copper wire binder and soldering or by a constant force spring. For 33kV cables with armour (SWA or AWA) also connect the earth braid to the cable armour by soldering or other equivalent method. Apply solder to the braid to form a moisture block at about 10mm below the cable sheath edge. Attach the braid with a wire wrapping at 50mm below the outer cut back edge.
- The high voltage cable jointer should then remove the conductive tapes and elements for longitudinal water tightness.
