11kV Termination - Single Core XLPE EPR Heat Shrink Cable Terminations

Cable Terminations 11kV 33kV | Single & 3 Core | Medium & High Voltage Cables MV HV

Nexans cable terminations are suitable for connecting and terminating 11kV single core polymeric cables with stranded copper or aluminium conductors, 16-800sqmm.

11kV terminations connect medium/high voltage power cables with polymeric insulation including XLPE and EPR to MV-HV switchgear, transformers and cable boxes – suits single core bonded or easy strip semi-conductive screens.

Heat shrinkable 11kV-33kV Nexans single-core termination kits, suitable for Medium Voltage polymeric (XLPE and EPR) insulated cables within an indoor environment i.e. air-insulated termination chambers.

MV-HV cables distributing 11kV power should always be prepared using correct cable jointing tools.

11kV cable terminations suit both copper tape screened (CTS) and copper wire screened (CWS), armoured (steel wire/braid) or unarmoured cables – single core heat shrink cable terminations are supplied in sets of 3 phases with sufficient materials to effectively terminate 3 single core cable ends.

11kV terminations are tested to international standards including CENELEC HD629.1 and IEC60502-4.

Offshore Cable Terminations 11kV

HV cable terminations are suitable for the connection and terminating of single core BS6883 shipwiring and offshore cables with EPR insulation – this includes 11kV cables with galvanised steel, tinned annealed copper or tinned bronze wire braid. Where cables are terminated in potentially explosive atmospheres, such as Zone 1 or Zone 2 according to ATEX Directive, a complete range of hazardous area cable glands are available.

Installing HV Heat Shrink Cable Terminations 11kV
  • 11kV Cables With Copper Wire Screen or Copper Tape Screens
Copper Wire Screen Cables
  1. Remove the outer cable sheath with 11kV sheath stripping pliers over a distance L + X (L= see table below, X = depth of cable lug barrel + 5mm). Remove bedding tape and copper strip. Clean the outer cable sheath over a distance of 50mm and apply a layer of red thermoplastic tape (with a 50% overlap).
  2. Bend back the copper wire screens over the cable sheath in a parallel way so that each wire rests upon the thermoplastic tape. Fix with a wire wrapping (2 or 3 windings) at about 50mm below the cutback edge of the 11kV cable sheath. Twist and bind the copper wire screens together, cut at the correct length, install the 11kV cable lugs and connect to earth. For cable terminations located outdoors with armour (SWA or AWA) also connect the earth braid/wire screen to the 11kV cable armour by soldering or solderless earth connection.
  3. The HV jointer should then remove the conductive tapes and elements for longitudinal water tightness.
Copper Tape Screen Cables
  • Remove the outer cable sheath with sheath stripping pliers over a distance L + X (L= see table below, X = depth of cable lug barrel + 5mm). Remove bedding tape. Clean the outer cable sheath over a distance of 50mm and apply a layer of red thermoplastic tape (with a 50% overlap). Carefully remove the 11kV copper tape screen over a distance up to 20mm from the outer sheath.
  • Connect the earth braid to the copper tape screen, by using a copper wire binder and soldering or by a constant force spring. For 11kV cables with armour (SWA or AWA) also connect the earth braid to the cable armour by soldering or other equivalent method. Apply solder to the braid to form a moisture block at about 10mm below the cable sheath edge. Attach the braid with a wire wrapping at 50mm below the outer cut back edge.
  • The high voltage cable jointer should then remove the conductive tapes and elements for longitudinal water tightness.
