During our monthly Distributor Review Meeting this morning with Kate Palmer-Randle we discussed further developing the Qualified Electrical Construction Contractor Accreditation (QECC) from 3M Electrical in the UK.
The Qualified Electrical Construction Contractor Programme (QECC) has been set up as a partnership designed to provide Jointer Training and valuable benefits to appointed 3M Electrical Contractor Partners.
As part of the QECC programme, contractors receive in-depth 3M Cold Shrink product and technology training, including theoretical training on 11kV, 22kV, 33kV, 52kV & 66kV Cable Accessories, including Joints & Terminations.
Once Certified the QECC contractor can apply for a 3M 20-year MV Product Warranty on completed projects which can be passed on to their client to offer them peace of mind on their investments and evidence Competency.
To date four companies have been geographically appointed, with a select number of new members set to qualify over the coming months.
Choosing a 3M QECC certificated company allows you to have peace of mind that the contractors you’re working with are trained to the highest level and backed by an extended 3M 20-year product warranty.

Ripley US02-7000 Semicon Shaver & Stripping Tools
Here Peter Hardman (Jointer – LV HV Cables) is shown expertly using the US02-7000 Tool manufactured by Ripley Tools to remove the bonded semi-conductor screen from Medium Voltage Power Cables – the cable standard type is N2XS(F)2Y (12/20 (24)kV) typically used for MV Power Distribution in several industrial sectors including data-centres.
When correctly selected and used for their intended application, specialised Cable Preparation Tools can and do prevent much of the human error identified in the field as a cause of cable joint or termination failure – this can allow MV HV cable systems to last well beyond the 30 year limit that many consider to be a cables expected life cycle.
Invest in the correct tools, get trained in their use and use them.
Start + Stop | note the integral start/stop facility guaranteeing closely controlled, perfectly clean and precise shaving by the Jointer across all cable diameter applications.
US02
The Bonded Semicon Shaving Tool has a unique blade shape which preserves the smooth surface on the XLPE insulation of medium voltage cables typically distributing electrical power at 11kV and 33kV voltages – the Ripley US02 tool eliminates the need for deburring or additional surface finishing of the cable insulation. Its optimal stability design securely supports cables with diameters from 18mm to 60mm throughout the shaving operation of the cable preparation process, prior to jointing or terminating medium voltage cables.
The US02 tool provides an exceptionally smooth finish and does not require lubricating grease as the integral wheels provide a sustained motion during the cable preparation process – the US02 has four settings on it that adjust the pitch as it winds down the cable and a stop that enables the jointer to provide a square cut to finish off. The settings are 0.5mm, 1mm, 1.5mm and 2mm.
Precision Accuracy & Effortless Repeatability for MV Cable Preparation
No Grease & No Clamps | MV HV Cables up to 60mm Diameter without the requirement for lubrication using Ripley US02-7000.

Thorne & Derrick are now Official Distributors for the Vicera range of Cable Jointing Stands – the introduction of this new product range is an excellent extension to our core ranges of Cable Jointing, Pulling Equipment & Preparation Tooling and we look forward to further supporting efficient, easier and more reliable power cable installations.
The Vicera range of Cable Stands are for both field or training centre use and provide safe and stable support of Low, Medium & High Voltage Cables – the cable stands are suitable for cable diameters 18-90mm with adjustable height.
The Cable Joint Stands feature stepless lateral and tilt adjustment and high strength clamps to prevent cable slippage or movement while jointing – secure and balanced cables when Jointers are undertaking highly skill-sensitive cable preparation prevents inadvertent damage to cables and future potential O&M reliability.
The cable support stands are rugged and durable for outdoor use in joint bays and trenches in all ground terrain conditions – this includes the support of 11kV/33kV/66kV cables to enable precise cable preparation by the Jointer prior to installation of joints, terminations or connectors on medium/high voltage power cables.
The Jointing Stands are used in the field to enable the completion of pole-top style outdoor terminations and also indoor substation Jointing & Termination installations.
