PFAS Free Cable Cleats
Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) can be found in numerous types of building products including wires and cable products due to their desirable functions such as weatherproofing, corrosion prevention, and stain resistance. However, their utility comes at a cost to health and the environment and so it is important for end users to be aware of the contents and raw materials in their products.
Ellis have released a statement to clarify that their cable cleats do not contain any PFAS or any other fluorinated substances:
“As formulated, the Ellis Emperor and Vulcan+ cable cleat do not contain any PFAS. Furthermore, we do not intentionally add any and to the best of our knowledge, the raw materials we use in these products do not contain PFAS, or any other fluorinated substances.”

PFas dangers & concerns
PFAS are a large class of thousands of synthetic chemicals that are used throughout society. However, they are increasingly detected as environmental pollutants and some are linked to negative effects on human health.
Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances have been recognized by various authorities as so-called “forever chemicals.” The strong fluorine-carbon bond results in products that do not readily degrade in nature, meaning that these substances become more environmentally persistent over time.
The behaviour of PFAS in the environment means that they tend to pollute groundwater and drinking water, which is difficult and costly to remediate. Certain PFAS are known to accumulate in people, animals and plants and cause toxic effects.

Ellis Patents has extended the appeal of its best-selling Emperor cable cleats by launching Emperor QUAD. Ellis are thrilled to announce the launch of their latest innovation strengthening their “QUAD Squad” with the EMPEROR QUAD Cable Cleat.
As an extension of renowned EMPEROR range from Ellis Patents, this ground-breaking addition offers unparalleled short-circuit protection, even in the most demanding environments. Suitable for systems run in quad formation, with high short circuit withstand requirements, the cleat extends their existing range of stainless steel cable cleats.
Initially designed as a bespoke solution for a defence project, the new variant was developed into a full addition to the North Yorkshire manufacturer’s range in response to a growth in the number of installations requiring heavy-duty quad solutions.

Designed with utmost precision, the EMPEROR range has undergone rigorous testing and certification to comply with IEC 61914 standards. This ensures uncompromising safety and performance, guaranteeing the highest level of quality for our valued customers.
The EMPEROR QUAD is ideal for a diverse range of applications, including oil and gas, petrochemical, marine, rail, and datacentres. Notably, our latest innovation retains all the features that have made the Emperor range immensely popular. The new Emperor QUAD is available in seven sizes, covering cable diameters ranging from 19mm to 49mm. Its addition to the range means Emperor cable cleats are now available to suit single, trefoil and quad cable configurations; Ellis Patents can claim a solution readily available for every situation where a cable cleat needs to deliver the highest level of short circuit withstand.
Kelly Brown, Ellis Patents sales director, said: “We’re justifiably proud of the longevity of our success – and we work extremely hard to maintain it. One of the key factors behind it is that we never rest on our laurels. Instead, we continually review our product range in the markets we operate in, and those we’re considering moving into. Ellis Patents has a strong, in-house research and development department that has a proven track record in taking product enquiries from initial CAD design through to prototyping, 3D modelling, testing and eventual production and manufacture. This enables the company to fill any gaps it notices or finds developing in the market and design and develop fully bespoke solutions for live developments.
Manufactured in type 316L stainless steel, Ellis’ Emperor cleats feature an integral LSF zero halogen polymeric liner and base pad that protects and cushions cables during short circuit conditions. In addition, they are quick and easy to install – especially the Twist Foot options, which allow them to be secured into place in seconds with just the twist of a screw.

“If these cables aren’t properly restrained then the risks are clear – the loss of vital services and the likelihood of live cables falling and causing potentially lethal hazards.”
Working in conjunction with Exova Warringtonfire, BRE and ETS, Ellis Patents initially developed its Phoenix Cable Cleat range in 2011. Prior to launch the products underwent a wide range of tests, including exposure to fire, impact and water spray, all of which combined to ensure that the range offers fire protection to the same level as the cables it is installed to protect.
