GRP Feeder Pillars
The following article has been written to provide guidance to civil engineering and groundworks contractors for the installation of GRP feeder pillars used to provide low voltage electrical power distribution.
Step 1. Concrete base must be clean and free from any earth, stones or any other debris which will prevent the feeder pillar or kiosk sitting flat on its base – it is recommend that a stepped base be cast for feeder pillasr where the inner level is 50mm above the base flange, so as to prevent water ingress into the kiosk.
Step 2. Orientation of the feeder pillar is to be agreed before the pillar is positioned on to its base. It is good practice to have the pillar sitting in the middle of the base with an equal amount of slab around the pillar. The feeder pillar can be manoeuvred using a jemmy bar from inside or outside the unit; care is to be taken so as not to damage the gel surface.
Step 3. Check for an equidistant gap between the door and door frame and that the doors operate freely. The doors can be adjusted by placing shims between the base and the feeder pillar directly in line with the door hinges; these shims should be of non corrosive metal, plastic or even GRP.

Step 4. Ensure that walls of the pillar are straight and are not “bowing”.
Step 5. Drill 12mm holes in the GRP base flange of the pillar at approximately one metre intervals using a battery drill (some feeder pillars may have already been pre drilled).
Step 6. Various anchor bolts can be used to pin the feeder pillars down depending on site specification – it is recommended to use an M 10 x 75mm sleeve anchor expansion bolt as standard. Size and depth of the hole should be in accordance with the fixing being used.
Step 7. Drill should be used at right angle to the concrete base; however, the holes can be drilled at an angle where a plywood board may prevent the drill from operating at 90 degrees.

Step 8. Re-check door levels after bolting down the pillar.
Step 9. Apply a bead of silicon to fill the gap between the feeder pillar and concrete base. This cannot be relied upon to provide a water tight seal; it is used for cosmetic purpose and will also prevent any concrete screed from running down the face of the concrete base.

Step 10. Remove the lifting eyes and seal holes with the plastic bungs provided.

Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Services – Manor House Development (Travelodge Addendum Specification)
A 60kVA 100A 3 phase electricity supply shall be provided.
This supply shall be terminated in a 100Amp 3 phase service cut-out mounted on a class 0 timber backing board within a Landlords feeder pillar.
The feeder pillar / control cabinet shall be vandal resistant IP65 hot dipped galvanised steel cabinet as per the Lucy Fortress Pillars or equal and approved.
The feeder pillar shall be painted to match the lighting columns and fitted with a Yale Lock or equal and approved.
Provide a new 100A 3 phase metal cased distribution board enclosed within a feeder pillar to serve the landlords services i.e. external lighting, vehicle charging points, CCTV, petrol interceptor.
All distribution boards shall be provided with integral main switch disconnectors miniature circuit breakers, blanks, lockable doors and 3 sets of keys to each of the door locks.
Provide PVC/PVC insulated single core cables from the service cut-out to the revenue meter and from the revenue meter to the distribution board.
Distribution boards shall generally employ type C miniature circuit breakers for final sub circuit protection.
The distribution board shall be provided with Class II surge protection as detailed in BS EN 62305.
The distribution board shall be sized to include a minimum of 25% spare outgoing ways arrnaged evenly over each phase, which shall be fitted with individual blanking plates.
Distribution boards shall employ miniature circuit breakers for final sub circuit protection. Circuit breakersshall be selected to take account of the thermal and magnetic effects of loads serrved, taking due account of any starting currents. Particular care shall be taken when selecting circuit breakers protecting circuits supplying LED driver units.
Distribution boards shall be labelled and scheduled in accordance with BS7671 – miniature circuit breakers shall comply with relevant British and European standards.

Design Process
Lucy Zodion CAD driven design procedure guarantees a well engineered product from enquiry to delivery. The dedicated design team will work with a client not only from the start, but through all the processes to the finished product. Lucy Zodion have designed and produced some very exciting innovative products over the last few years, and T&D offer customers the latest cutting edge technology with highly skilled engineers and designers.
110V, 230V and 400V a.c. variant feeder pillars are available in both above ground and in-ground locations equipped with earth leakage and overload protection devices to ensure high operator safety levels. Compact retractable power pillars with telescopic design to mount flush to the floor surface provide discreet electrical power for typical applications including markets, shopping centres and airports.

Pictures 1 and 2 show the intricate engineering detail that goes into the design of a bespoke pre-wired feeder pillar. Although you can tell that the feeder pillar is only partially complete you can see the attention to detail and pride that Lucy Zodion input into all of their feeder pillars.
After manufacture the feeder pillars are thoroughly tested within the purpose built LV test area at Lucy Zodion to ensure they meet BS7671 and meet the requirements of BSEN 60439. The test procedures and quality assurance inspections driven by the ISO 9001 accreditation ensure all products including pillars perform correctly and safely.

Pictures 3 and 4 show how painting or powder coating the feeder pillars helps them to blend into their environmental surroundings to suit the needs of the client.

Pictures 5 and 6 shows a stainless steel feeder pillar that is ideal for high saline, coastal and marine atmospheres to provide power for temporary events – the pillar is manufactured in non-corrosive 316 grade stainless steel for hostile climatic conditions.

Pictures 7 to 11 show that careful consideration is taken when designing the feeder pillar to ensure that the installer, end user and maintenance team are satisfied with the completed installation. In this case an external override switch which is provided to avoid opening the feeder pillar unnecessarily. Please note the space below the isolator on the right for the Distribution Network Operator (DNO).

Picture 12 shows how feeder pillars can be sympathetically painted to suit their surroundings. Lucy Zodion can paint feeder pillars to any RAL or BS. This specific pillar has been modified to provide temporary supplies for regular events that take place in recreational areas including parks, open spaces, playgrounds, nature reserves, wildlife sites and sports pitches.

Lucy Zodion were approached by the client (Eagle) to manufacture a galvanised steel feeder pillar from their Fortress range to supply three electric vehicle charging points within the clients own site – the double door feeder pillars are designed to provide robust and reliable distribution of low voltage electrical power.
The initial plan was for the EV charging points to be fitted to the wall of the building.
Lucy Zodion suggested that the side walls of the feeder pillar could be utilised to provide the three IP67 sockets, which lessened the upheaval to the site with less civil engineering, electrical and cabling work required.
The client also wanted to be able to provide electrical isolation via each socket from within the feeder pillar but also needed to ensure that only authorised personnel could do this.

To achieve this Lucy Zodion fitted the new Hasp and Staple lock system so the client could fit a padlock as pictured below.
To complete the project the electric vehicle power pillars were painted to the clients specific RAL paint colour specification.
The design, procurement, assembly and testing was all completed in time and the customer saved money on the project.
