Our decades of experience through LV-HV cable accessory testing, product knowledge and assisting on site engineers and cable jointers has allowed us to discover and produce quality products to facilitate specific jointing applications for subsea power cables (inclusive of fibre optic cores), LSF fire resistant cables and BS/IEC standard XLPE, EPR, PILC, or PICAS medium/high voltage power cables – this includes trifurcating, transition and trifurcating-transition jointing kits for the connection of modern technology polymeric insulated Triplex cables to traditional paper insulated lead covered cables (PILC).

Pictured below are 3 single phase Shrink Polymer Systems single core XLPE armoured 11kV cable joints installed in a very tight cable duct with confined space working and restricted working space for the jointer to position and set the cables prior to heat shrinking the joints.
Note the outer protection, heavy wall, heat shrink tubes have been fully shrunk to the outer cable sheath of the 11kV power cable with no raised or “unshrunk” edges.
There are no scorches or heating damage to the heat shrink outer sleeve demonstrating excellent flamework by the jointer when using the gas torch – the flame must always be on the move never applying heat to the same area for too long.
The armour cage for the AWA has been neatly fitted to provide earth continuity of the cable armour using armour earth clamps.
The cable joint’s slim and short length design has assisted the cable jointer to enable the 11kV circuit to be jointed and installed between the two steel beams in challenging worksite conditions – trefoil cable cleats are installed to protect and restrain the 11kV cables in the event of a short circuit situation.

Heat Shrink Straight Joints – jointing 11kV voltage single core cables with XLPE insulation, copper tape screen and aluminium wire armour AWA according to BS6622, the 185sqmm stranded copper conductors were connected using mechanical shearbolt connectors.

Pilot Cable Joint
The pilot cable joint pictured below is twisted and tipped type.
The cable jointer had to improvise the installation due to the absence of a type tested manufactured cable joint which caters for this specific LV cable configuration – it would be usual to use a resin cable joint for standard straight jointing of pilot cables up to 100 pair.
Pictured jointed is a 30 core PILC armoured cable to 2 x 7 pair jelly filled steel wire armoured (SWA) telephone cables with PE insulation.
The Jointer used a small LV branch joint shell as a mould for resin which provided both mechanical and moisture protection. The connection of the cable cores was by soldering and then small lengths of heatshrink tubing were used to insulate the cable joint.
The Jointer established earth continuity of the lead sheath to wire armours on the plastic cable with constant force roll springs and tinned copper braid – to remove traces of petroleum jelly from the pilot cables 3M recommend use of their cable jointers and cleaning wipes.

ABB NKT SMPGB Straight Joint
SMPGB straight joints manufactured by ABB are for jointing EHV XLPE and EPR insulated transmission cables with aluminium or copper conductors. The cable joints are suitable for jointing two cables that have different dimensions or screen sheath designs. The cable joint consists of a pre-moulded rubber tube with two pre-moulded rubber adapters, a bolt connector and a prefabricated PUR casted copper casing as outer protection for the joint.
In this instance it is recommended to use Alroc Tools for sheath, screen and insulation removal, however the correct cable jointing tool to use is dependent on the length of the chamfer and the EHV Joint product that is being installed.

How To Remove The Aluminium Sheath From Consac Cable
- Mark the aluminium sheath at the cable joint centre and make an additional two extra marks at 60 degrees to form an arrow – this arrow MUST point to the cable jointer
- Select the correct cutting wheel for the Consac sheath stripping tool according to the cable cross sectional area. The 45 thousands of an inch cutter is used for 70mm to 120mm cable, the 70 thousands of an inch cutter is used for 150 to 240mm cable
- Set the angle of the Consac sheath cutting tool to 60 degrees, using the front control wheel and scale
- Using the rear pressure control wheel, open then close the tool onto the first of the 60 degrees marks. Apply the light pressure then rotate the tool outward along the cable until it butts up to the PVC sheath edge, this should occur at tool bottom dead centre
- Repeat this operation, moving the cable jointing tool forward and backward along the cable, gradually increasing the pressure using the rear wheel. Continue this process until scuff marks from the shoulders of the cutting wheel appear along the edges of the cut, then stop
- Remove the cable cutting tool and re-set the cutter angle to 60 degrees on the opposite hand. Re-fit the tool and repeat operations 4 & 5. Remove the tool on completion
- At the point where the two tool cuts join, use the edge of a six inch half round file to deepen the cut until the underlying papers begin to appear. The flat side of the file must point towards the inside of the arrow
- Using a hammer and pliers lift the point of the arrow – wearing insulating gloves unpeel the aluminium sheath from the cable until the ends of the cut are reached. The sheath should now appear as shown in the illustration pointing away from the cable jointer
- Fit PVC binders at the points where the underlying papers are to be terminated
- Bear the cut part of the sheath flat with a pair of wooden beaters
- Holes can be punched in the aluminium sheath where required using a special purpose hole punching tool
Note: Using approved cable cleaning wipes ensure that the prepared Consac cables are cleaned thoroughly and all dirt, debris or contaminants are removed.
