Setting

Figure 3 & 3a Insert the conductor between the blades up to the cutting point
Insert the conductor between the blades, up to the desired cutting point (Fig. 3). For a running conductor, press the locking lever (1) and open the tool head (Fig 3a).
Fully retract the lower blade (3) before attempting to open the tool head. With the conductor on the lower blade (3), close the tool head and fully secure the lever (1).
♦ Warning:Â Before commencing the cutting operation ensure that the lever (1) is fully secured: partial closure may damage the tool head.
Cutting Blade Advancement
Press the operating button (5) (Ref. to Fig. 3) to activate the motor-pump. The ram will gradually move forward until the lower blade (3) touches the conductor.
To halt the advancement release the button (5) and the motor will cut out.
♦ Warning:Â Make sure the blade is exactly positioned on the desired cutting point otherwise re-open the blade following instructions and reposition it.
Cable Cutting
Firmly hold the tool and operate the button (5) to gradually move the lower blade (4) to cut through the conductor.
When the cut is performed release the button (5) to ensure the maximum pressure relief valve isn’t activated.
LED Worklights
Whilst the tool is in operation, the work area is illuminated by two high luminosity LED Worklights that switch off automatically at the end of the cycle.
Blade Retraction
By operating the pressure release button (6) the ram will retract and open the lower blade.
Battery Status

Figure 4 Battery Level Indicator
The battery is equipped with LED indicators that indicate the remaining battery life at any time by pressing the adjacent button (9):
- 4 LEDs illuminated: fully charged
- 2 LEDs illuminated: 50 % capacity
- 1 LED flashing: minimum charge, replace the battery
Worklights (11) illuminated combined with an alarm audible when the operating button (5) is pressed (Fig.4) is an indication that the battery voltage has dropped below a minimum safety threshold
Under these conditions the tool will not start and the battery should be replaced or recharged (80 minutes to fully recharge battery).
After each working cycle and the extraction of the battery from the tool, an integrated battery cut-off device will operate after approximately 70 s.
The LED nearest to button (9) will then flash 5 times each 14 s approx. The battery will be reactivated when it is reintroduced into the tool and the operating button is pressed.
Using The Battery Charger
Carefully follow the instructions in the battery charger user manual.

Where hydraulic cable cutting tools loose their cutting edge it is recommended that the blades are replaced to enable the continuation of clean and efficient cutting.
In this case Thorne & Derrick and Cembre recommend proceeding as follows:
How To Replace Cutter Blades
Cembre Cable Cutting Tools
The following instructions should be read in conjunction with the image below.
Lower Cable Cutting Blade
Release latch (28) and open the cable cutter tool head
Operate moveable handle to advance the lower cutter blade (18) until holding screw (29) is visible on the ram (14)
Using a flat blade screwdriver remove the holding screw (29) and release the lower cutter blade (18)
Insert the new blade and fit the holding screw
♦ Warning: Before closing the cutter head release the oil pressure and retract the lower blade (18), otherwise the tool head assembly may hit and damage the lower cutting blade.
Upper Cable Cutting Blade
Release latch (28) and open the cable cutter tool head
Remove circlip (20 and extract the head pin (19) enough to release the cutting tool head assembly
Remove circlip (25) and pin (26) to release the latch (28)
Remove the latch spring from the upper cutter blade
Unscrew the 4 screws (21), remove the left hand guide (22), the right hand guide (24) and release the cutter blade (23)
Fit the left and right hand guides to the new cutter blade – place the spring into its seat and refit the latch
Fit the blade assembly to the head (13) fully insert the pin (19) and secure with the circlip (20)

Thorne & Derrick International are Main UK Stockists and Suppliers of Cembre tools including crimping and cutting types for all constructions of LV MV HV cable.
The following short article provides information about the general maintenance of the Cembre model HT-TC051 cutting tool.
Air in the hydraulic circuit may affect the performance of the hydraulic cable cutting tool e.g. no advancement or slow advancement of the lower cutting blade, lower blade pulsating.
For competitive prices, stock availability and technical advice about the Cembre HT-TC051 tool please do not hesitate to contact us.
In this case Thorne & Derrick and Cembre recommend proceeding as follows:
How To Purge Air Bubbles
From Hydraulic Circuit
Cembre Cable Cutting Tool
- Hold cable cutting tool upright in a vice with handles open (Fig 1)
- Unscrew main handle (03) from tool body (12) to expose the rubber oil reservoir (02)
- Remove reservoir cap from the Cembre tool
- Operate moveable handle several times in order to advance the ram
- Press the pressure release handle (58) to retract the ram (14), discharge oil pressure from the circuit and return all oil to the reservoir
- Repeat points (1-5) five times to ensure all air bubbles in the hydraulic circuit are purged into the reservoir of the tool
- If the oil level is low, top up the oil level
- Remove all air from reservoir (02) and fit cap (01)
- Assemble the main handle (03) to cutting tool body
♦ Oil Top Up – every 6 months check the oil level in the reservoir. If necessary, top up the oil level to the top lip of the reservoir and remove all air from reservoi.
- Always Use Clean Recommended Oil
- Do Not Use Oil Or Recycled Oil
- DO Not Use Hydraulic Brake Fluid
If the Cembre tool continues to malfunction and not cut cables safely or accurately return the hydraulic tool for service/repair.

Cable Sheath Stripping Tool
Remove Outer Sheath & Jacket From High Voltage Cables
Alroc DMSR/80-160 cable jointing tools are used by jointers to remove the outer sheath and aluminium/lead shield from HV & EHV cables with outside diameters 80-160mm
Integral insulation screen detection is provided by successively performing a longitudinal and circular cut.
Alroc DMSR/80-160 cable jointing tool has an embedded mechanical dial gauge allowing the jointer to score the aluminium shield without cutting and causing cable damage.
The Alroc cable tool provides safe and precise cable cutting by the HV-EHV Jointer – a longitudinal cut ensures the cable screen is correctly scored without damaging the cable layer and setting up the thrust to prevent screen damage caused by the cable cutting blade.
The video demonstrates removing outer sheath from the EHV Extra High Voltage cable and the ability to switch from longitudinal cut to circular cut without removing the jointers tool from the cable.
A sound alerts when the tool blade is touching the aluminium/lead shield – the Alroc DMSR/80-160 cable jointers tool allows for very fine tuning and precision of the cutting depth, with a screen thickness capacity of 11mm / 0.433in and a diameter range of 80-160mm / 3.150-6.299in.
T&D stock Alroc cable jointing tools to enable the removal of outer cable sheath, XLPE insulation and semi-conductive screens (bonded and strippable).
