Sonus XT – Compact Ultrasonic Testing Device for Preventive Maintenance ON MV HV Switchgear & Cables
-
uploaded by Chris Dodds - reading time 2 minutes
The versatility of the Sonus XT makes it ideally suited to work with any plant maintenance program and the perfect complement to other Predictive Maintenance (PDM) Technology.
The ultrasonic testing device is easy to use converting ultrasound into audible signals showing instantaneous and maximum sound level readings in decibels.
Ultrasound detection can be utilised to transmit early warning signs that detect faults on connections in cabinets and OHL (when using the parabolic dish – available as an optional extra). Inspections can be performed quickly and safely by plant personnel with minimal training. Fast and accurate diagnosis of problems using the Sonus XT will save you time and money.
The Sonus XT can quickly and safely perform closed panel airborne ultrasound inspections of electrical equipment including Switchgear, Switchboards, Panelboards, Transformers, Motor Control Centers and Process Equipment Panels to detect early warning signs including: Arcing, Tracking and Corona.
âž¡ Please note Sonus XT detects PD at above 5kV as it definitely won’t work on LV systems.

Single Pole Power Connectors – Safe & Reliable High-Current Power Connections Up To 800A
February 7th, 2018
Powersafe – Single Pole Power Connectors
-
A Guest Blog by Sean Frazier (Sales & Marketing) - estimated reading time 4 minutes
2017 saw a great increase in demand for Power Generators on the National Grid and at Events worldwide – a trend that is set to continue in 2018.

UL Listed Cable Connectors
As a result, LV-HV electrical safety has become a prominent concern for power distribution executives, with high-current diesel generators often left in touching distance of the public, at roadsides, festivals and within housing areas.
That’s why Phase 3 Connectors have innovated product enhancements to Single Pole Connectors with the Powersafe range.
Powersafe cable connectors have several features that allow for safe and reliable high-current power connections up to 800A, assuring power distribution managers can rest assured of minimal risk.
The UL Listed plugs are also an industry leader in high current power connection (800A) quality; perfect to mate with the Powersafe Box.
The cable connectors are designed to connect single and three phase high current power circuits, Phase 3 Powersafe single pole connectors are at the forefront of both safety and technical capability.
Single Pole High Current Low Voltage Cable Connectors
Rated to 500amps and 800amps depending on cable size, specification and power source – dual compatibility for single and 3 phase LV power distribution applications.
Single pole power connectors are used for electrical power connections where multi-pole connectors and cables would be impractical to handle due to size, weight and minimum bending radius of cables – typically used to connect large generators and fixed power sources for high power temporary equipment and power supply.
Single Pole Connectors 500amps 800amps
Power cable connectors for direct attachment to busbar are available for drawing-off power to temporary installations or feeding power into busbars such as temporary power generator hook-ups during electricity outages.

Features & Benefits of the Phase 3 Power Cable Connectors?
1) Finger-Proof Contact
There’s always one drunk person at a festival or an intrigued child who wants to touch the shiny generators and cables!
Frustrating.
However, finger-proof contacts on the cable connectors means risk of potentially fatal human contact with live power is minimal. The finger-proof cable connector feature also means generators are safe for installation engineers if power connections are unknowingly disconnected under load. That’s why they’re the choice of power cable connector at prestigious events like the World Cup, Winter Olympics and Glastonbury.
2) Clear & Locked Connection
PowerSafe cable connectors are colour coded and mechanically keyed – meaning each line can only mate with its compatible socket e.g Earth with Earth (Green/Green). This ensures a successful, quick and safe assembly every time.
The locking mechanism prevents accidental disconnection of cable connector under load, as well as integral cable strain relief – meaning no more unplanned power outages! The connector is the replacement for CamLock, which are now banned in Europe with the US expected to follow suit.
3) High Impact Cable Connectors & Temperature Protection
Phase 3 connectors are manufactured with high quality thermoplastics and fitted with rubber hand grips, perfect for high impact and temperature protection. That clumsy installation technician won’t be costing you tonnes in replacement cable connectors by bashing them around – they’re made to last!

5) Power Off Assurance
When connected to a Powersafe Panel Mount you cannot disconnect cables from the generator unless the power is off. This is ideal for those seeking assurance that the cables are not live when lying around if you’re using this setup.
6) Water & Dust Proof IP67 Rating
Rainy day woes with your power generators?
No problem!
IP67 ingress protection means the connectors are fully protected against dust and capable of withstanding water immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. This is great for applications such as maritime and military or data centres in remote areas of the world.
7) UK Manufactured & Assembled Cable Connectors
Powersafe cable connectors are manufactured and assembled in the UK, with all materials sourced in Europe or America. With 100% control over the manufacturing and supply chain, you are guaranteed high-quality and lightning quick production. Phase 3’s Scottish engineers in cold, old Fife assemble and package the connectors ready to deliver with industry leading lead times of less than a week (some suppliers work at 17+ weeks!)

Joints & Terminations For Cables
In Hazardous Area Locations
Thorne & Derrick distribute MV-HV Joints & Terminations specified for use with power, control and instrumentation cables installed in hazardous areas where the risk of igniting the “Fire Triangle” precludes the use of naked flames and therefore heat shrink terminations or joints – manufactured from silicone rubber housing the Nexans AIN range of cold-applied cable accessories are slip-on terminations which do not require the application of naked flames to activate heat-shrink tubings.
Specially developed cable accessories including cable joints with resistance to aggressive hydro-carbons, flame and fire are available – standard resin cable joints already installed in hazardous area locations which require protection against potential fire can be over-wrapped with fire protection blankets to achieve fire resistance to the cable according to IEC 60331-11 & 21.
