BAND-IT ULTRA-LOK Cable Clamps Reduce Cable Theft | Case Study
April 8th, 2021
Cable Clamps
Cable Theft is a Growing Problem Worldwide
Cable theft occurs globally, but in South Africa it’s fast becoming a national crisis.
Estimates put the loss between 5-7 billion Rand (423 – 593 million USD) a year, with serious implications for the country’s economy, reliability of electricity supply and security.
Cable thefts can cause power outages that could last for days, with copper cable thefts constituting more than 90% of all these thefts. The cost of replacing the metal has a significant disruptive effect on industry and contributes to increased tariffs and prices for ordinary South Africans. Furthermore, the replacement of stolen LV MV HV cables has to take preference over essential maintenance.

Tamper Resistant ULTRA-LOK Cable Clamps
To deter theft, the security of any traditional cable installation can be increased by applying an ULTRA-LOK clamp as frequently as every 150mm of cable. The effectiveness of the ULTRA-LOK cable clamps was recently proved at a client site in August 2015. The client operates in the petrochemical industry, where conveyer belts are located in secluded areas and are difficult to monitor making cable theft monitoring a major challenge. The verdict, after looking at various BAND-IT ties, was that the ULTRA-LOK open end clamp and installation tool would be the best suited to the client’s projects.
BAND-IT’s team was tasked with supplying the client with application tools and clamps, and provided training to the operators that installed the clamps.
INSTALLATION: UL4000-D TOOL
For installing the BAND-IT ULTRA-LOK clamps out in the field, the BAND-IT UL400-D tool is recommended, as it is ideal for mobile installations. The UL400-D power tool uses pre-set tension settings with ULTRA-LOK bands to consistently achieve maximum clamping strength. One tool tightens the clamp and cuts off the tail right at the buckle for a smooth installation. Powered with a Lithium-ion battery, the UL4000-D battery charge lasts longer with consistent peak performance through the life of the battery.
- Speed: Installs cable clamps 3-5x faster than hand tools
- Strength: 20% stronger than BAND-IT band & buckle, full tension lock, provides tighter clamp than band & buckle
- Easy to use: Training takes minutes, reduces mistakes vs. stainless steel band & buckle
- Save money: Faster installation provides lowest installed costs, power tool eliminates costly training vs. band & buckle installation tools, increases productivity and quickly move to your next job
- Safety: Less time spent in hazardous work zone, reduces injuries caused by hand tools, reduces fatigue and chronic ailments caused by hand tools, optional UL Safety Belt available

BAND-IT Cable Ties
Shine At Precious Metals Refining, Smelting Complex
The conditions in the refinery complex are unique due to its highly-corrosive and hazardous area atmosphere, as even 304 stainless steel is subject to rust after an extended period. Therefore, the specific requirement was for high-strength, durable cable banding / strapping solutions to cater for these challenging conditions. Previously the company was using plastic cable ties for the facility’s electric cables, which proved not durable in the harsh operating environment.
Over a five-month period, Banding & ID Solutions Africa has been upgrading the tying system used on the cables at the refinery complex using a mixture of reusable BAND-IT cable ties. To date, it has supplied about 10,000 reusable BAND-IT cable ties to the company.
BAND-IT Cable Ties Outlast Plastic Cable Ties
The cable straps are expected to last up to five years before they need to be replaced, which is significantly longer than the six-month lifespan of the plastic cable ties (non-metallic) used previously.
In addition to BAND-IT Ties being well-suited to the application at hand, the contractor was impressed that the cable ties were easy to install using a ratchet-operated BAND-IT C075 Bantam strapping tool.
BAND-IT Ties
Thorne & Derrick distribute Stainless Steel Cable Ties manufactured by BAND-IT for bundling, strapping and locating low, medium and high voltage MV HV cables.
Cable ties manufactured from stainless steel are used in industrial and hazardous area locations where high temperature and exposure to corrosive atmospheres requires a high security cable tie and clamping solution – the cable ties provide excellent resistance to weather conditions, UV radiation, extreme temperature, aggressive chemicals or fire.
The cable ties are used to bundle, fasten, clamp and tie LV MV HV cables onto cable containment including cable tray, ladder or basket. The high strength, corrosion-resistant cable ties provide excellent support for all types of power, control and instrumentation cables with resistance to chemical corrosion, UV and vibration.
We provide competitive prices for stainless steel cable ties and cable cleats and cable hanging systems from extensive stocks to UK and international destinations.

BAND-FAST Reduces Cable Management Material & Labour Costs by 50%
March 30th, 2021Stainless Steel Cable Clamps
BAND-IT BAND-FAST
The Aker H-6e Drilling Rig is one of the largest and most sophisticated semisubmersibles ever commissioned. It is no surprise that every detail was carefully considered in its development – including how to best secure and clamps cables running through the rig.
Traditionally, cable cleats have been used for this application.
However, Aker Solutions was looking for a less expensive, easier to install and more lightweight option for cable management, one that also would minimize the risk of short circuits.
BAND-IT PPA-coated BAND-FAST clamps were recommended.
BAND-FAST ACES THE TEST
Adopting a new solution calls for rigorous evaluation. You need to assure not just cost savings but performance. To put the recommended clamp to the test, SINTEF (Norway’s largest independent research organization in Scandinavia) and Aker Solutions jointly evaluated the suitability of 5/8″ wide PPA Coated BAND-FAST clamps as an alternative to cable cleats under short circuit conditions.

BAND-FAST scored beyond expectations, and as a result more than 40,000 were used on the project.
Specifications for BAND-FAST Used on the Aker H-6e Rig
- 316 Stainless Steel, 5/8″ wide
- PPA 571 Coating: halogen-free, low smoke & fume
- DNV and GL Type approved materials
WHAT MAKES BAND-FAST BETTER?
BAND-FAST clamps are a superior choice for many reasons. The lower profile of finished cable runs save space, and the PPA coating reduces the risk of damaging cables as they are pulled. Using the BAND-IT C075 installation tool, the captive sealing clip is quickly and precisely locked into place when fastening,
Overall, labour is reduced by 50%, compared to installing cleats.
When it comes to the costs, it’s simple: clamps are less expensive than cable cleats. That difference really adds up when you consider that there are more than 40,000 fixing points on the Aker H-6e.

BAND-IT C075 Bantam Tool
Sometimes, One Size Fits All!
One dilemma with cleats is that you need to invest in a comprehensive stock to accommodate different sizes of wires. BAND-FAST clamps easily adjust to accommodate a wide range of cables and will hold single, trefoil and quadrafoil configurations.
By going with clamps instead of cleats, Aker was able to drastically reduce their inventory. A bonus is that the reduced weight of materials on rig leads to increased production capability.
More Than Just Cost Savings
Any reduction in risk is welcome in the Oil & Gas industry.
BAND-FAST clamps are light and easy to carry, which is precisely opposite of cleats. Their low weight translates into reduced fatigue and less stress-related injuries.
There is no danger of being hit by an accidentally dropped cleat, and in this case Aker further reduced drop-risk by adding a wrist strap to the installation tool – a simple yet important solution.
➡ In addition to 316 Stainless Steel, BAND-FAST is also available in 201 Stainless Steel, Titanium, Alloy 400, Alloy 625, and other materials upon request.

CABLE hangers IN THE RAIL INDUSTRY

Convex Cable Hangers | Supporting Rail Cables & Tunnel Wall Applications
Investment in the rail sector has grown rapidly over the last decade and much greater funding is expected going forward. Both UK and worldwide, there is a growing ambition for more modern, reliable and sustainable mass transit systems.
Ellis has the most extensive range of cable cleat designs and accessories on the market which are suitable for all applications within the rail industry. Overground and underground rail sectors use an extensive range of cable types including telecoms, alarm and control cables, signalling and data, and a range of power delivery and electrification cables. Many rail cables are installed using cable hangers. Ellis has improved the design of the basic galvanised steel hanger with reduced weight, radiused corners (to reduce damage to cables during installation) and a convex hanger profile for cable sagging.
Cable hangers are curved to fit the profile of a tunnel to assist with tunnel wall applications.
These reduce the level of supporting steel structures necessary as the hangers can attach directly to the tunnel profile. Where the kinematic envelope of trains is tight and space is restricted, these profiled hangers provide an effective solution.
NEW convex cable hangers | ellis Patents
Ellis has now enhanced a cable hanger product that has been one of its best-sellers for over 20-years. The technical team have taken the company’s cable hangers, which are used primarily in the rail industry and made them stronger and, remarkably cheaper.
Stephen Walton, Ellis’ Technical Director, said: “We’ve been successfully manufacturing and selling our cable hangers for two decades, and it’s fair to say that the design is tried, tested and completely trusted by all those who use it.”
Ellis achieved this by looking at every aspect of the product and looking at ways to improve on it. The first key development is that there are two different versions of the new Ellis cable hanger – a standard Mk2 cable hanger, and a convex hanger; the latter designed specifically for use in tunnels, where the mounting surface is often curved.
Benefits of the new Mk2 cable hangers include:
- Rounded corners that reduce snagging points
- Spin galvanized (55µm or 150µm thickness) to protect against erosion
- Only 6mm thick, leading to reduced product and shipping costs
- Wide range of sizes available
- Suitable for cables up to 100mm diameter
- Custom designs available
- Rolled designs for tunnels available
Meanwhile, the convex cable hanger has all the benefits of Mk2, plus:
- The removal of all sharp edges presented to the cable by traditional hangers
- Through innovative design, it’s the same strength as Mk2, but only 5mm thick
