Heat Shrink Sleeve For VFD Cables
Thorne & Derrick International, based in the UK, are Specialist Distributors of cable repair products used to re-instate damaged cable sheaths and jackets where the extent of damage to the cable does not necessitate the need to carry out a cable joint to the section of compromised cable.
What Are VFD Cables?
Basically, VFD cables distribute electrical power from AC drive systems to AC motors.
Variable-frequency AC motor drive output cables are subject to harsh operating settings characterised by high voltage spikes, high noise levels and adverse environmental conditions during normal service conditions.
Consequently, VFD cables must conduct not only the overall high power levels of the pulse-width modulated (PWM) signals but also the extremely high voltage which can occur when standing waves develop on the conductors. This high voltage can cause corona discharges to occur between the conductors of conventional cables, causing damage not only to the cabling itself, but also to the motors, bearings, drives and related equipment.
This damage can cause failure of the entire drive system, resulting in costly production downtime. Here, we present a simple but effective method of repairing cable sheath damage to VFD cables using cable repair tapes manufactured by 3M Electrical.
Why High Performance VFD Cable Is Important

Pictured below is a Prysmian (P) TEOF F-RFOU P1/P8 VFD 1.8/3kV 3X150+3G35mm2 IEC 60332-3-22 2013 cable – the cable outer sheath has been clearly damaged.

CABLE REPAIR TAPEs
A recommended cable repair solution is to remove the outer VFD cable jacket 200mm each side of the damage so a confident and accurate assessment of the extent of cable damage can be ascertained.
Assuming cable damage is limited to the sheath and not caused impact into the cable wire armour or braid then a simple cable repair can be made using 3M Scotch 24 copper mesh shielding tape, 3M Scotch 2228 rubber mastic sealing tape and then cable sheath re-instatement using 3M HDCW heat shrink wrap-around cable repair sleeve.

Central Earth Terminal (CET)
Earthing System For SWA Wire Armoured Cables | Cable Glands & CETs
Thorne & Derrick International, based in the UK, continue to supply CET Central Earth Terminal cable gland plates to street lighting contractors for the termination and installation of BS5467 Low Voltage XLPE Insulated SWA Armoured 600V/1000V power cables.
The CET Earthing System is specified for the termination and bonding of all sizes of SWA armoured cables into confined spaces of street furniture – typical applications include street lighting columns, feeder pillars or traffic signs.
CET002Â &Â CET003
The CET Central Earth Terminal is available in 2 designs – the CET002 and CET003 series of earth terminals offer an inherently strong and simple design which exceeds the BSI (Cable Gland) torque test, manufactured exclusively in zinc plated solid brass.
CEL offers a comprehensive range of earthing components that cater for all standard size armoured cables – the terminals are easy to use and install by the street lighting engineer.
All wire armour cable terminations are “made-off” from the front without the need of a spanner providing an effective earth bond.

CET002 Terminal
The Charles Endirect range of earthing terminals includes compression glands, CET’s, saddles, terminal blocks and gland plates for the earthing and bonding of all steel wire armoured (SWA) street lighting cables.
Pictured: Earth Terminal CET002 – shown terminating wire armoured cables with the armours in the splayed position.
Cable Glands BW CW
The CET system is complemented by a full range of BW brass cable glands and CW brass glands to BS6121 and stand off gland plates as well as the solid brass earth blocks – EB42 – frequently used on street furniture backboards.

- Zone 2 – according to ATEX a place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, persists for a short period only.
3M Scotchcast Hazardous Area joint kits include the new flame-retardant, hydrocarbon-resistant, halogen-free 1402FR resin packs.
3M Scotchcast Hazardous Area cable joint kits are designed for use with both single-core and multi-core armoured power cables up to 3.3kV – this new 3M product features a unique hinged mould body and totally enclosed mixing system which is suitable for use in areas of high soil contamination and ATEX rated hazardous areas.

Read our Blog about jointing offshore cables located in hazardous areas using 3M Electrical cable joints.
The 3M Scotchcast LVI-3/x range replaces the traditional Scotchcast LR range of cable joints and is designed for use with both Cembre type copper through connectors (compression splices) or mechanical shearbolt connectors, the two smallest 3M joints LVI-3/2C and LVI-3/3C being supplied with mechanical connectors to suit multi-core cables.
- High-performance 2-part polyurethane 1402FR hazardous area cable jointing resin
- Suitable for use with wire armour (AWA and SWA) cables and wire braid (GSWB) cables

3M Electrical Cable Joints – for conductor jointing either Cembre (Crimp) or Pfisterer Sicon (Mechanical) style connectors can be used depending on application and Jointer preferences.
Although cable joints are not formally certified according to ATEX there are several minimum specification and performance requirements for cable joints when being used to connect, repair or joint cables in hazardous areas.
For example 3M LVI-3 type cable joints include specially formulated 3M Scotchcast 1402FR resin – this cable jointing resin is hydro carbon resistant, flame retardant, halogen free and chemical resistant for use in hazardous area locations.
