On railway systems, all trackside equipment that has the potential to become live has to be earthed, to protect both people and the environment. This applies not only to catenary pylons, but also to signalling systems, bridge railings, fences, etc. Pfisterer has now developed the RSCT Connectors – a simple, safe, and reliable solution for protecting people and the environment without needing to strip cable insulation.

The RSCT is designed to save a great deal of time in comparison with established practice. The ground tap connector for earth connection cables on railway systems combines almost 100 years of contact technology experience at Pfisterer with its expertise as a “full-service provider” in the field of rail infrastructure.

RSCT Connectors Installation

Installation up to 50% Faster

Using insulation piercing technology, main and tap cables are installed without having to strip the insulation. The compression of grounding and tap cables that was previously used, as well as the restoration of the insulation with a Heatshrink sleeve, is no longer necessary. The plastic enclosure with its seals guarantees electric shock protection in accordance with IP1X.

Simple Installation in the Existing System

The RSC-T ground tap connector comprises several parts and can be mounted directly onto an existing system. The bolts of the RSC-T are based on the proven SICON technology (SICON 332 846 001) typical to their range of shearbolt lugs and connectors.

The ground cable is laid in place without any preparatory work and enclosed by the connector using a locking bolt. The SICON piercing bolts penetrate the insulation to establish safe and reliable contact with the ground conductor. Any possible damage to the metallic conductor is avoided by means of the proven SICON technology.

Pfisterer also manufactures RSC-T ground tap connectors to meet individual customer requirements, where experts will carry out all the necessary consultation, dimensioning, engineering, pilot production, testing, and series production.

Patented Contact Technology

The bolts of the RSC-T are based on the proven SICON technology. The patented shear bolt has a stepless construction and utilizes the full load capacity of the thread at all times. The friction disc at the end of the bolt prevents the metal conductor from being damaged. For the RSC-T, the proven SICON bolt has been further developed and equipped with a friction disc which features insulation piercing technology. This establishes a reliable contact with optimum contact force. The SICON bolt is installed using a standard tool and gently shears off on successful installation.

Hydraulic cutting units, from the B68RC3 range, are fitted with a unique wireless sensor paired to the receiver integrated in the pump using European frequencies (868 MHz).

The sensor is maintenance-free as it is fully protected and has battery-free technology.

All RC heads are fitted with eyelets to hang the head for better support during operation, and grounding point is provided to facilitate the grounding of the head when cable cutting is required.

The Cembre B68RC3 range of hydraulic cutting units features 3 variations: the B68RC3-85, B68RC3-96 and B68RC3-120. Each variation of the radio controlled cutting units have different cutting diameter ranges.

Radio Controlled hydraulic pump

The new portable pump B68M-P18-KV-RC3 is the core of every hydraulic cutting unit, which is battery operated for independent use.

The B68M-P18-KV-RC3 has the same inherent strength as the Cembre range of 18V tools – including the range of Hydraulic Cable Cutting Tools. The pump is a lightweight and of high capacity, equipped with an innovative radio remote control designed specifically for man-hole environments to allow operators to control and operate the pump out of the man-hole at a safe distance.

B68M P18 KV RC3 Portable Pump

New Li-Ion 18V 7Ah batteries used in the hydraulic pump provide high capacity while improved operating speed results from a revitalised hydraulic system with double speed action, and a maximum pressure sensor assures greater precision and repeatability of the pressure cycle, while a security valve doubles the provision for operator safety.

The unit is fitted with a patented unique system for stopping the pump when the cutting head sensor signals that its blades have travelled fully. At this point the LED indicator and buzzer notify the operator of the successful completion of the cutting operation.

For this reason, each pump is paired to its specific cutting head only and it must be considered as a complete unit.

A manual pressure release button is installed in case of emergency. Easy access to the oil reservoir is by means of an oil top-up inlet.  The innovative remote control function is able to work in man-hole environment where radio communication is normally more complicated.

The unit features an OLED display to provide essential real time tool operating information including:

• Operating mode selection (cutting or crimping)
• Release mode selection (Smart release, manual release)
• Minimum set pressure and momentary pressure reached in bar/psi to allow verification of correct operation

• Number of cycles performed
• Number of cycles before scheduled recommended maintenance
• Motor temperature
• Operating command (radio or manual)

The unit has a secondary operating trigger which can be selected through the OLED display in the case that it is needed – the unit is fitted by dielectric oil for operator protection in case of cutting cables that may be accidentally live.

Each radio remote control is paired to only its specific pump.

Designed with improved handling characteristics for convenience and manageability, the Cembre B68M-P18-KV-RC3 cutting unit has a fibreglass-plastic shell with high resistance to wear and damage.

The B-FL750ND 18V Handheld Cordless Hydraulic Tool from Cembre is the new generation of handheld, cordless cable cutting and cable crimping tools, characterised by the “Bilinear” structure of the tool’s mechanics.

Operator comfort and convenience are key factors in producing repeatedly consistent high integrity crimped joints. Cembre ‘ND’ bilinear tools have their mechanical centre of gravity nearest to the operator’s wrist to optimise the overall ergonomics of the tool and provide a wider support for the hand.

Thus the innovative misalignment between the pump drive mechanism and the hydraulic system both reduce the torque generated on the operator’s wrist and best distribute the stresses acting on the hand.

A greater punch speed and punching force result from a revitalised hydraulic system with double speed action. The balanced punching head pivots 180deg through a full 360deg rotation for ease of use in confined spaces.

Equipped with intelligent automatic return at the end of the pressing cycle (Smart Release) and Li-Ion 18 V-2Ah rechargeable high capacity batteries.

Fitted with a maximum pressure sensor for enhanced precision and repeatability of the maximum pressure cycle, and a pressure relief valve providing additional safety for the operator.

The Electronic Pressure Sensor (EPS) guarantees the precision of the crimping operation, checking the actual value of pressure and informing the operator about possible errors.
