NEW Ripley Stripping Tools Improve Safety And Reliability
IMPROVE SAFETY AND RELIABILITY
Cable Stripping Tools
The following blog has been republished alongside the below video from Utility Service Agency, where they demo their favourite Utility Tool® tools for improving safety and reliability during cable preparation.
“What I like about this tool is that it’s very easy to see your blade when you’re doing your chamfer in the field.”
Improve reliability and safety at the same time; take the knife out of your hand and put the Ripley Tools in your hand.
Utility Tool from Ripley offer two by two and four by four cable strippers with bushings. The bushings on each side are specifically designed for the conductor sizes you need. “Take about a twelve to 14 inch cut of all those sizes, and send them off to Ripley tools to get your specifically sized bushing.”
“To use these tools, just run it down to your spot, I have my hand as a stopper. Perfect cut. No scoring. Safe. Good to go.”
For those that need more adjustability on the system, the WS 71 and WS 72 Series provides mid span. Just tighten it down and again, run it right down. If you want to take the WS 71 and 72 and make them into one tool, take the US07-7000.
This is new tool from Ripley is capable of doing end strips and also your midspan strips all in one tool. “We used to have two tools for your chamfering. Now we have one tool.”
We also have a US10 7000 which performs a 30 degree chamfer, and then we have a US10 7001 which performs a 45 degree chamfer. See below for further product specification.

Hydraulic Cable Spiking & Cutting Tools
Spiking Cable | Check Voltage Absence on LV & HV Power Cables
The PICOUP 250and PICOUP 400 2 in 1 hydraulic cable spiking and cable cutting tools are used to check for and ensure the absence of voltage on LV MV HV underground power cables.
After the cable spiking process is complete, these PICOUP tools supplied by Thorne & Derrick can also be used to cut the cable. These tools offer total security to the user during application according to NFC 18510 standards.
Cable Spiking Tool Features
2 actions combined into one single tool (spiking and cutting)
Enables the user to limit any resulting short circuit to a single-phase / ground fault when spiking multi-core cables. This cause any protective devices to trip before a 2 or 3 phases fault can be created
In the event of spiking a live cable, the spiking blade can be replaced easily (minimising cost impact)
No physical connection between the tool and the user
Damage to infrastructure is minimised when spiking as a single phase to earth fault is created using a dedicated, local 70mm² copper earthing cable
Cutting failure sensor
Indication on the remote at the end of cutting operation
Hydraulic over-pressure safety valve
Battery charge status indicator
Prevents the start of cutting if the battery is low

Cembre HT131-C
Thorne & Derrick International are Main UK Stockists and Suppliers of Cembre tools including crimping and cutting types for all constructions of LV MV HV cable including medium/high voltage 11kV/33kV power cables.
The following short article provides useful information about maintaining optimum performance of the Cembre model HT131-C crimping tool.
Cembre HT131-C crimping tool is lightweight and ideal for LV-HV cable jointing, crimping, splicing and terminating applications.
The hydraulic crimping tool features spring loaded handles allowing the Cembre die sets to be advanced with one hand – the other hand free to position the electrical connector or cable lugs prior to crimping.
For competitive prices, stock availability and technical advice about the Cembre HT131-C tool please do not hesitate to contact us.
Maintaining Crimping Tool Optimum Performance – Model Cembre HT131-C
The Cembre HT131-C hydraulic crimping tool is robust and requires very little daily maintenance – ensuring you follow the instructions below will help to maintain the optimum performance of the tool:
Accurate Crimping Tool Cleaning
Dust, sand and dirt are a danger for any hydraulic device. It is essential that after every use the crimping tool should be wiped with a clean cloth removing all residue paying special attention to pivots and moveable joints
Tool Storage
Cembre HT131-C is supplied with VAL P3 plastic case.
When not in use, the HT131-C tool should be stored and transported in the plastic case to prevent damage.
The plastic case (Type VAL P3) has the following dimensions 620x380x135mm (height) and weighs 2.5 kg.
Air in the hydraulic circuit may affect the performance of the crimping tool. For example no lower die advancement, slow advancement of the lower die and lower die pulsating would all cause issues. If this is the case proceed as follows:
To Purge Air Bubbles From Hydraulic Circuit
Fig 4 – HT131-C Crimping Tool Position For Maintenance Operations
a – Hold tool upright in a vice with handles open (Fig 4)
b – By an hexagonal 2.5 mm key, remove screw (65) and main handle (04) to expose oil reservoir (03).
c – Remove reservoir cap (01).
d – Operate three or four times the moveable handle (56), to advance the ram (28).
e – Depress pressure release pin (73) until ram is fully retracted.
f – Repeat points (d – e) at least five times,to ensure all air bubbles in the hydraulic circuit are purged into the reservoir.
g – If the oil level is low top as described below
h – Remove all air from reservoir and fit cap (01).
i – Assemble main handle (04), and holding screw (65).
If the tool continues to malfunction return the tool for service.
Oil Top Up
Every six months check the oil level in the reservoir. If necessary, top up the oil level to the upper lip of the reservoir and remove all air from the reservoir (as described above).
Hydraulic or Battery Operated Crimping Tools
Cembre B1300-CE battery crimping tool is an 18.0V cordless hydraulic crimping tool which can be operated with one hand and is balanced for greater control – this tool is the battery operated version of the Cembre HT131-C with a crimping and compression range up to 400sqmm for LVand MV cables up to 33kV.
Hiretech Limited has completed successful yard trials with its new 5 tonne subsea cable cutting shears.
The cable cutting tool trials were conducted ahead of a client’s recent cable repair project.
The trials were carried out to verify the required flows and pressures and confirm the cut times on 130mm, 203mm and 213mm diameter 3-core submarine export cables.
The cable cutting shears performed to expectation, delivering fast and efficient cuts to all three cables, utilising only 50-60% of the available hydraulic power.
Additional test cuts were performed on 9 5/8” drill casing, further demonstrating the powerful cutting abilities of the shears on tubular materials.
Hiretech added the shears to its rental offering following positive feedback from its client base. Available with 950t (5 tonne) and 1700t (10 tonne) shear force, the shears have been specified by Hiretech to provide safe, high performance cutting solutions on a variety of materials.
Performance, reliability, ease of operation and maintenance were the key considerations at the specification stage. The cable cutting shears have been designed for water depths of up to 10,000ft and can be powered and controlled from the surface, or from an ROV with hot stab and intensifier.
Duncan Duthie, Subsea and Decommissioning Business Development Manager at Hiretech, has been overseeing the product integration into the firm’s rental portfolio.
Mr Duthie commented, “This very significant investment by Hiretech demonstrates our continued commitment to deliver robust, reliable, and high performing rental products across a variety of sectors both domestically and internationally. As efforts shift towards a focus on efficiencies and sustainable energies, Hiretech strives to ensure it continues to meet evolving industry and client requirements.”
The company made two six-figure investments in 2020, adding subsea shears and air winches to its fleet, as progress continues to diversify and expand its rental equipment offering.
Hiretech also offers a range of pumps, powered reels, HPUs, overboard chutes, subsea grabs, air compressors and personnel to provide fully integrated rental solutions.
Video footage of the cable and casing cutting is available on the Hiretech website at www.hiretech.rentals/rentals/subsea-tooling/
