Electrical Insulating Rubber Gloves
Testing Insulating Gloves
Guide To Safe Use of Classes 00, 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 Electrical Gloves
Improper use of electrical rubber insulating gloves can be a matter of life and death.
Get them retested regularly to make sure that they are still electrically safe.
Treat your rubber insulating gloves well and they can last a long time. The testing of insulating gloves will help to prevent failure which could lead to electrical shock if the surface integrity has been comprised by “wear and tear”.
As Main UK Stockists for the CATU Electrical range of insulating gloves Thorne & Derrick regularly are requested to provide care and maintenance advice to ensure gloves provide adequate and ongoing electrical safety and protection to the wearer.
Any Brand of Insulating Glove can be tested. Here are some examples:
- CATU
- Regeltex
- Honeywell Salisbury
- Polyco
- Clydesdale (Novax)

3 – Field inspection & Stock
Do not confuse the periodic inspection with the inspection before each use. Together with the periodic inspection, it is strongly recommended that a visual inspection of the gloves is carried out before each use.
It is important to store the gloves in their UV-Resistant polythene bag and keep the gloves away from light, heat, and ozone. Ideally, the user should use our pneumatic tester to inflate the gloves for a good visual inspection and keep the gloves in our polypropylene store box for both transportation and storage.
4 – Special Properties
Gloves that pass the special properties (acid, oïl, ozone, very low temperature) are not resistant to chemicals. The test is to guarantee electrical protection in case of accidental contacts. After completing the electrical work, it is recommended to replace the contaminated gloves.
A periodic dielectric inspection service
- On receipt of your gloves to our premises, the gloves and sleeves are documented and then washed and dried.
- They are then visually inspected by our technicians, using inflation equipment.
- The next stage is electrical testing. Test equipment is used and tests are carried out according to the correct voltage for the class of glove. After the electrical testing has been completed they are again inflated and visually inspected. The gloves are then stamped and packed for return.
- Documentation accompanies the gloves and sleeves through all stages of testing and any failures are recorded. Any glove that fails will be destroyed. If the customer wishes, failures can be replaced with new items from our stocks.

The Risk & Electrical Switchgear Guide | Failure of electrical switchgear can cause death, serious injury and major damage. If you own or operate this type of equipment in industrial or commercial organisations, this book is mainly aimed at you. It should help you to select, use and maintain switchgear safely and reduce the risk of accidents. This guidance is aimed at owners and operators of electrical switchgear in industrial and commercial organisations. It may also be useful to others. It will help managers, engineers and others to understand their responsibilities and duties in the selection, use, operation and maintenance of high-voltage switchgear. Here you can download the HSE Guide to Keeping Electrical Switchgear Safe.
Warning
- To ensure optimum protection, all insulating components must be used (stool, gloves, pole).
- The detector only works with AC power (no detection is possible when using DC installations).
- Before use, always check equipment integrity (especially the gloves).
- Before and after checking to ensure that no voltage is present, always check correct installation operation.
- This check must be performed in contact with bare conductive parts.

Discount retailer B&M have been hit with a £1million fine after a horrific industrial accident
A horrific industrial accident at B&M’s headquarters saw an electrician’s body swell to four times its normal size.
Workman Shahenur Rahman was set ablaze during the industrial accident at the firm’s base and distribution centre at Estuary Commerce Park in Speke and remained in a coma for two weeks after.
Liverpool Crown Court heard that B&M was advised by Leep Utilities in June 2018 that maintenance work was required on the high voltage switchgear at its HQ. The retailer hired two generators from supplier Aggreko in order to maintain the supply and “allow some core functions” to remain in operation while the power was being cut. Aggreko suggested Bolton-based company Daker be contracted to connect these generators.
Shahenur Rahman was connecting a generator to B&M’s mains voltage distribution board. The board was in close proximity to the high voltage equipment which was energised while Rahman was wiring up the generator. It is believed that the spanner which he was holding came into contact with a live high voltage busbar, causing an instant blast and fireball. The 35 year old sustained serious burns to his arms, hands, thighs, legs and face. Rahman was rushed to hospital where doctors later placed him in an induced coma for 2 weeks. He then had to undergo a serious of skin grafts and was unable to work for five months.
The HSE found a “series of failings” by both B&M and Daker in the planning and execution of the job.
“Unfortunately, they failed at the very first hurdle by putting a man in charge of overseeing the work who, at his own admission, was wholly unqualified to fulfil such a role. It was a role he simply wasn’t capable of fulfilling, and one that he should never have been asked to undertake by his employer.”
B&M Retail Limited admitted two health and safety breaches, while Daker Limited pleaded guilty to one. Neither defendant has previous convictions for such matters.
The retailer was fined £1m and told to pay £4,978.30 in court costs plus a £170 victim surcharge. Daker would have faced a £12,000 fine, but this was reduced to a “nominal” amount of £100 due to its “dire financial straits”.
Ensuring you have the right systems in place when working with electricity is critical to the wellbeing of your employees and your Company. Electricity can be extremely dangerous and hazards such as an arc flash and electric shock could result in death.
Suggested PPE & electrical safety equipment includes: insulating gloves, arc flash clothing, voltage detectors, insulating matting and portable earthing

smart solar energy solutions for a net-zero future
Solar panels are the leading source of renewable energy for our homes and businesses, with more and more buildings opting to have them installed. Solar panels have several benefits for the environment due to their green energy and lack of emissions when running.
Solar PV (Photovoltaic) generation increased a record 156 TWh (23%) in 2020 to reach 821 TWh. It demonstrated the second-largest absolute generation growth of all renewable technologies in 2020, slightly behind wind and ahead of hydropower.
Thorne & Derrick have been working with a top-tier worldwide project developer involved in PV power generation, operation and maintenance services. The developer is committed to using smart solar energy solutions for a net-zero future.

The client had a requirement for arc flash protection to protect their staff that are involved in working with solar panel battery storage. Batteries used alongside solar PV allows surplus electricity generated by solar panels to be stored for later use rather than exported to the National Grid.
Working around batteries can expose an employee to both electrical shock and arc flash hazards. Battery charging can sometimes generate flammable gases, so it is important for employees to avoid anything that could cause open flames or sparks. Employers must consider exposure to these hazards when developing safe work practices and selecting personal protective equipment (PPE).
We supplied the client with a number of SFX251 arc flash switching suits from stock, to provide personal protection to workers undertaking maintenance and repair operations.
The STRATA SFX251 Arc Flash Clothing Kit (25 cal/cm²) is a comfortable, lightweight arc flash switching suit providing total protection against arc flash risks for wearers working on or near live electricity.
Arc Flash Protection Kit (25 cal/cm²) kit consists of:
- 1-piece Hi-Viz Overall | With reflex striping, plenty of pockets, concealed zip fastening and zip up to collar for safety
- 1-piece Arc Flash Helmet | Retractable Truecolour® visor real view vision (no discoloration)
- 1-piece Arc Goatskin Leather Gauntlets
- 1-piece Container of disposable ear plugs SNR37
- 1-piece Storage Bag |with pockets and shoulder strap for easy transport and storage

Swalek provide a comprehensive range of Solar & Wind Farm Maintenance Services including high voltage power cable installation, jointing, termination and testing.

Swalek’s wind farm maintenance division recently supported a customer with their off-supply issue at a wind farm in Scotland, near Falkirk. An engineer attended site to assess the problem and found that the site had lost communications. The engineer checked the Scottish Power Network and didn’t find any problems. It was assumed that there was a loss of supply.
The engineer then carried out a detailed investigation and it was discovered that Transformer 1 had a failure. An 11kV insulation resistance test was carried out which proved a fault on the HV winding. Swalek High Voltage Services are now in the process of sourcing and installing a new 800kVA transformer to replace the faulty transformer and ensure the wind farm continues to generate.

Swalek carry out wind farm high voltage design, build, operation & maintenance services throughout the UK and across Europe.

T&D Supply Major MEP Project With Cable Sealing Solutions
Thorne & Derrick Sales Engineer, David Tinning, has recently a new major project with Cable Sealing Solutions to protect buildings and equipment against water ingress, gas migration and fire spread to a mixed-use development in London called The Broadway.
For this specification, working with CSD Sealing Systems we recommended use of the ETAG CE certified Nofirno fire rated system, which can be used on pipe penetrations and cable transits with various fire ratings as they pass through fire boundary walls or floors.
Protection of the electrical infrastructure can be provided up to a maximum of 4 hours and it will also provide long-term cable sealing protection against flood and gas ingress provided by the Nofirno duct seal system.
The sealing system will protect Apartment Fit-out, Shell & Core and Offices & Amenities sections throughout the project.
Thorne & Derrick can specify and provide the most suitable solution every time – just tell us about the application, including the wall depth and construction type, cable diameters and quantities passing through each opening and the rating required.
Be it Gas, Fire, Water, Rats; whatever the risk, we can seal.

NEPTCO tapes, distributed by Thorne & Derrick, are manufactured with a low stretch polyester material that distributes heat across its wide, flat profile. This improves efficiency and prevents “snap back”, which occurs when a rope under high tension elongates and either breaks or snaps back; often injuring the installer.

A variety of reel lengths of the cable pulling tape is available to suit any installation. Available in a variety of strengths (up to 6,000 lbs or 2727 kg) which enables extensive application use.

Configuration | the Interface C type connectors provide versatile and optional system design configurations. Here, our team of Jointers were deployed to “Piggy-back” the Euromolds into the MV switchgear compartment. This dual-cable installation is enabled by the use of a connecting plug to mate the front-end connector to the back-end.

Sealed & Supported | The 33kV single core power cables manufactured to BS7870 Standard were sealed at the transformer point of entry using heat shrink cable sealing glands to prevent water ingress and protect against cable damage. The cables are cleated to provide mechanical retention to the cable in position and electrical short circuit protection in the event of a fault situation.

Correct Termination Of A Cable Lug Onto An Earth Bar | AN Wallis Guide
July 5th, 2022
-
by AN Wallis | Jason Leatherland | International Sales Manager at AN Wallis & Co Ltd
Earth Bars
AN Wallis designs, manufactures and supplies thousands of Earth Bars per year, it is one of our ‘core’ product ranges. This has given AN Wallis many years of history and experience dealing with Earth Bars and puts us in a good position to answer any questions or queries on the subject or topic of Earth Bars.
One question we often get asked is to clarify the correct way to terminate a cable lug onto the actual Earth Bar? For instance, should the cable lug be bolted face down directly onto the actual copper bar or should the cable lug be placed ‘floating’ between the nuts?
The correct way to terminate the cable lug onto an Earth Bar seems to cause confusion so the purpose of this article is to give our recommended installation instructions to eliminate the common mistakes being made during installation.
Before we begin to talk about the correct installation, we think it is important to look at the actual termination components of the Earth Bar and know what these are.

Each typical AN Wallis ‘standard’ termination point consists of the following components.
- 1 No. x M10x35 Phosphor Bronze Hex Head Set (7)
- 1 No. x M10 Phosphor Bronze Flat Washer (4)
- 1 No. x M10 Phosphor Bronze Spring Washer (8)
- 2 No. x M10 Phosphor Bronze Full Nuts (5)
When manufactured, the combination of components are assembled on an Earth Bar in the following order: Hex Head Set → Flat Washer → Nut → Spring Washer → Nut

Our recommended way to terminate the cable lug onto an Earth Bar is to ‘fix’ the flat side of the cable lug directly to the actual copper bar. This method allows for full contact to be made between the connecting cable and the Earth Bar and prevents any reduction in cross-sectional area.
Based on the components supplied on a AN Wallis Earth Bar we recommend the ‘fixing’ to be made in the following combination (as detailed in the below picture)
1. Lug over the Hex Head Set (in direct contact with the Copper Bar)
2. Flat Washer
3. Spring Washer
4. Nut
5. Nut

Our recommended way to terminate the cable lug onto an Earth Bar is to ‘fix’ the flat side of the cable lug directly to the actual copper bar.
Under normal circumstances, when fixing down a cable lug having the spring washer and one nut should be absolutely fine, however, at AN Wallis we like to go above and beyond therefore we supply two nuts! The second nut is to act as a locking nut against the first nut making the installation even more secure and safe.
There are occasions where people incorrectly assume that the supply of two nuts must be used to ‘sandwich’ the lug in between the two i.e. the lug ‘sitting’ on one nut and tightened up by the other.
This is not correct and not recommended at all. This method does not allow for full contact to be made between the connecting cable and Earth Bar, therefore the actual cross-sectional area is reduced.

We can think of two reasons why this incorrect method might be used. Firstly, it could be a lack of knowledge/training on the correct installation procedures, and secondly, it could be ‘laziness’ of the installation contractor, wanting to save some time and effort by not fully disassembling the termination components to attach the lug and reassemble correctly.
This may save slight installation time, but it is incorrect and more importantly, unsafe!
Our recommended way to terminate the cable lug onto an Earth Bar is to ‘fix’ the flat side of the cable lug directly to the actual copper bar.
To conclude, our recommended way to terminate the cable lug onto an Earth Bar is to ‘fix’ the flat side of the cable lug directly to the actual copper bar so that the cable lug is directly in contact with the actual copper bar.
This method allows for full contact to be made between the connecting cable and the Earth Bar and prevents any reduction in cross-sectional area.

Thorne & Derrick and AN Wallis are aware of the crucial role of an Earth Bar which is why they manufacture high quality, affordable earth bars that are designed and tested to all relevant standards – manufactured from hard drawn copper bar to BS EN 13601 and tested to BS EN 62561-1 Class H.
