Thorne & Derrick are Official Media Sponsors & Exhibitors at IDC Technologies, Inc. Earthing Conference UK which took place at the Park Regis Birmingham this month.
The aim of this conference was to demystify the subject of earthing and present the subject in a clear, straightforward manner. Earthing as a subject has been under-represented over the years and this event will attempt to remedy the gaps in technical knowledge and improve practices in the industry. The UK & Europe need a unified practical approach to earthing which can be commonly understood and widely applied.

Thorne & Derrick Secure New Renewable MV Cable Accessory Order
This month, Thorne & Derrick International were delighted to confirm receipt of a new purchase contract order for an offshore wind farm project – this is to supply 33kV Tee Connectors (Nexans Euromold) and Inline Cable Joints (3M ColdShrink) following several rounds of technical qualification, specification and commercial submissions.
Thorne & Derrick’s technical submission for the jointing of the 33kV cables was accepted by the Senior Lead Cable Specialist based upon their 3M QS2000 range – the cable joint designed utilises a unique Cold Shrink delivery system. The 3M Cold Shrink products are supplied pre-stretched on a removable core for efficiency and ease of installation by the jointer with an integral electrical field control device and faraday cage pre-installed in the insulation body to reduce complexity during the installation.
As Approved Vendors to Vattenfall, the Swedish multinational power company, Thorne & Derrick will be supplying a 33kV Inter-Array Cable Accessory Package including medium voltage joints, connectors and cable cleats to support the installation of 19/33 (36)kV Single Core Submarine Cable with 24 Fibres (IEC 60502-2). Pictured Termination: 3M 95EP-631-2 is a 52kV Single Core Outdoor Termination utilising QTIII Technology for 26/45(52) kV Cables. Here’s a pallet shot of a Network Rail project order we have shipped out from Thorne & Derrick in April. The 52kV Cable Terminations manufactured by 3M Electrical utilising their innovative Cold Shrink Technology are Network Rail (NR) certified and PADS Listed as meeting the requirements for installation on their electrical infrastructure.
Thorne & Derrick supply an extensive range of 400V-33kV Rail Cable Accessories & Power Distribution Sytems including feeder pillars to contractors undertaking Low Voltage Power Distribution, HV Electrification & Substations, DC Traction & Networks, OLE and Track Feeder Cable Renewals.

Preserving The Heritage
A heritage studio revived for the 21st Century
We are currently working on an exciting project with a heritage film studio, that is undergoing work to expand. The studio plans to expand the complex with new studios and workshops to bring it into modern times and continue use.
Thorne & Derrick are working with the client to provide cable protection and ducting solutions to assist with the expansion project.
Cable protection covers and underground warning tapes are installed over LV, MV and HV power cables in trench and ducted cable installations with high visibility colour providing a visual warning of danger when excavating cables.

Thorne & Derrick are the Specialist Distributor & Stockist for Alroc in the UK for their ranges of manual and motorised Cable Preparation & Jointing Tools for the removal and stripping of outer cable sheath, semi-conductor screen and insulation from LV, MV, HV and EHV power cables.
The ORACL manufactured by Alroc and supplied by Thorne & Derrick enables the cable jointer or user to longitudinally score the peelable semiconductive layer from medium/high voltage cables (typically 33kV up to 1000sqmm) in order to peel it off carefully by hand – this is a key stage of MV HV cable preparation prior to the installation of Power Cable Accessories including joints, terminations and connectors.
The ORACL screen scoring tool covers most “easy-strip” peelable semicon thicknesses by having adjustable scoring depths of 0.4, 0.6, 0.9 & 1.1mm – contact us for prices, stock availability or further information.

Dogger Bank Wind Farm: Meet the Buyer event
Jonathan Hewitt, Key Account Sales Engineer at Thorne & Derrick, enjoyed attending the Dogger Bank Wind Farm ‘Meet the Buyer Event’ organised by NOF. The event included presentations by Dogger Bank, Port of Tyne and North Star Renewables. The networking lunch and one-to-one meetings created a great opportunity to meet project managers and stakeholders to learn more about opportunities within the project.

Dogger Bank Wind Farm and its Tier 1 Contractors are committed to the development and growth of a competitive UK supply chain. The meet the buyer event was held to showcase contract opportunities during the operations of this flagship UK development.
More about Dogger Bank
The Dogger Bank O&M Base is being constructed at the Port of Tyne and is due to be completed in Q4 2022. The project is the UK’s first HVDC connected wind farm and will feature the world’s first unmanned HVDC offshore platforms. North Star Renewables has been contracted to provide four Service Operation Vessels to the project. One rotation of GE’s Haliade-X turbine can power a UK household for two days. 277 units of the 13MW and 14MW turbines will be used on Dogger Bank.
Dogger Bank is a joint venture between SSE Renewables (40%), Equinor (40%) and Eni (20%).

Following extensive and successful field trial testing the Nexans Euromold range of Connectors & Bushings have now received Full Acceptance by Network Rail with Official PADS Approval – specifically this includes Nexans Tee Connector model QM909TB Interface F and associated equipment bushing QM909AR. The product authorisation by Network Technical Head Power Distribution HV/LV on behalf of the Network Rail Acceptance Panel (NRAP) permits the installation of the Tee Connectors and Bushings to ground mounted oil filled transformers up to 52kV.

Sealing Inter-Array Cables
Working with Orsted, Van Oord and the Inter Array Project Manager from LS Cable & System, Thorne & Derrick have specified a cable sealing system to prevent water ingress into the power and fibre optic cores of de-energised high voltage inter-array cables (IAC).
Manufactured by 3M Electrical their range of EC type Cold Shrink cable end caps will provide protection from exposure to moisture, contamination, corrosion, ozone, UV radiation and other environmental hazards.
The proposed product solution was adopted based upon safe working procedure, field service history and product testing according to ASTM D 412-75: – the Cold Shrink technology cable caps are a flame-free and tool-less installation.
The 3M EC-4 type cap will be applied to protect and seal the exposed power core cable ends following the cable pull-in in general accordance with the installation process outlined in the video below – these will be mounted by the Cable Installation Contractor on the wind turbine foundation and offshore substation (OSS) after removal of excess pull-in lengths.
The fibre-optic cables will be sealed with 3M EC-1 type cap – Scotch 2228 type mastic tape is used to wrap and build-up the diameter of the fibre optic cable where the outer diameter of the FO cables are smaller than 11.6mm. Scotch 2228 is a conformable, self-fusing electrical rubber mastic tape with a strong, temperature stable adhesion for maximum continuous operation up to 90° Celsius.
The Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms will comprise a total of 111 Siemens Gamesa 8 MW turbines. The offshore construction will be carried out during 2021 and 2022, with the project expected to be fully up and running in 2022.

This month we supplied cable cleats and management products NTT’s Hemel Hempstead 2 (HH2) Global Data Centre. Floating production storage and offloading Unit
This month we have been working on a project to supply electrical safety equipment to switchrooms on a floating production, storage and offloading platform (FPSO) located in the North Sea – a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit is a floating vessel used by the offshore oil and gas industry for the production and processing of hydrocarbons, and for the storage of oil. Ship-shaped FPSOs are by far the most widely used type of floating production unit, accounting for over 100 deployments globally.
The customer required a replacement for their current insulating matting to be installed in their LV and HV switchrooms on board the FPSO. The replacement was required due to the age of the existing matting; showing typical wear and tear and no longer providing the correct level of safety or insulating protection to offshore workers.
The switchrooms on the vessel ranged from 1kV to 17.5kV, and required matting to meet the correct voltages. After careful project specification, Thorne & Derrick supplied the client with Class 2 insulating matting for the HV switchroom, plus Class 0 matting for the LV switchroom according to IEC6111. Each versatile roll was supplied at 10 x 1m wide, with the end user intending to cut the rolls to suit the individual requirements.

It involves a subsea development of production and water injection wells tied back to a floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) with oil export using shuttle tankers.

A pair of new lifts has been installed at Meols station to improve accessibility for those travelling on the Merseyrail network.
The £2.2 million project was funded through the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Access for All programme and forms part of a wider project funded by both the DfT and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.
The Access for All programme was introduced to make travelling more convenient for disabled passengers travelling by train across the country, and previous projects on the Merseyrail network include lift installations at Formby, Birkenhead North and Orrell Park.

Building Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm
This month, Thorne & Derrick achieved Approved Vendor status with SSE Renewables, the renewable energy subsidiary of SSE plc which develops and operates onshore and offshore wind farms and hydro electric generation in the United Kingdom and Ireland. We are now working with their Project Managers & SAP’s to improve electrical site safety and outage response capabilities throughout their asset portfolio through the specification and supply of Joints, Terminations & Connectors for 33kV networks.
Supporting Seagreen
Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm project is located 27km off the coast of Angus in the North Sea. A joint venture between TotalEnergies (51%) and SSE Renewables (49%), Seagreen will be Scotland’s largest and the world’s deepest offshore wind farm when complete.
The Seagreen offshore wind farm was consented with permission granted to install 150 offshore wind turbines. 114 offshore wind turbines are currently under construction with an installed capacity of 1,075MW and will be fully operational by early 2023.
Seagreen is an offshore wind farm development owned by SSE Renewables (49%) and TotalEnergies (51%).
SSE Renewables is leading the development and construction of the joint venture project, supported by TotalEnergies, and will operate Seagreen on completion.
Substation | Seagreen is building a new substation at Tealing which will receive the electricity generated by the wind farm for conversion up to 400kV for onward transmission on the national electricity transmission system.

Webinar – An Introduction to Dogger Bank Wind Farm
Our Key Account Sales Engineer, Jonathan Hewitt, enjoyed attending the webinar hosted by NOF this month – the well supported online event provided an introduction to the operations phase of this extensive offshore renewables project. Over 900 delegates joined the w
ebinar to learn and understand more about the North East based wind farm, the Tier 1 Contactors involved in the project and the opportunities for the supply chain. The presentation provided oversight of the supply-chain requirements from Wind Turbine to National Grid substation.
Dogger Bank Wind Farm is located more than 130km off the North-East coast of England and is being delivered by joint venture partners SSE Renewables, Equinor and Eni – in total the wind farm is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to supply 5% of the UK’s demand, equivalent to powering six million homes.
Thorne & Derrick look forward to working with our supply chain and clients to deliver support to the Dogger Bank development including Cable Termination, Jointing, Pull-in & Electrical Equipment up to 66kV.

February Rail Project | Working with Ellis Patents we completed the specification and have now moved into manufacturing for our largest contract to date to supply TfL (London Underground) approved cable hangers across several depot modernisation projects.
Thorne & Derrick in consultation with the Asset Manager at Transport for London and their appointed Telecoms & Power contractor secured formal Authorisation & Approval for the Pegasus range of non-metallic cable support hangers. The product will provide safe cable management of the cable route within the Bridges & Structures category – over 1000 hangers with proven lifecycle performance and utilising the standard J-type design for support of multiple cable runs including single, 3-way and 5-way configurations are now scheduled for delivery.
